Reporting to the Philanthropy Lead, this position plays a key role in leadership philanthropy through prospect identification & qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors, with an emphasis on corporate giving and sponsorship for the division. In a team environment, the Development Officer develops and manages a portfolio of corporate prospects and donors in a professional manner to maximize the financial support from this portfolio to the Society. The Development Officer also fosters excellent stewardship relationships with donors at all stages of the cultivation cycle and successfully executes highly customized donor centered plans aimed at obtaining sponsorships and corporate gifts at the $5000+ level.



  • Accountable for establishing and enhancing the Society’s position as a leader in donor-centred revenue development
  • Ensures key intention targets are achieved through development of personal tactical development plan, produce quarterly reports and take corrective actions to ensure targets are met.
  • Stays informed and up-to-date on best practices in leadership philanthropy, changes in the philanthropic environment and donor preferences and works collaboratively to develop and implement best practices to achieve revenue results
  • Manages a portfolio of up to 150 prospects and donors capable of giving $5000+
  • Contributes to developing the operational plan and budget and executes the plan
  • Participates in the identification and qualification process of potential donors. Develops strategies for prospective donor solicitations including delivering cases for support using best practices techniques and liaises with Stewardship team on prospect management initiatives
  • Ensures the implementation of appropriate donor recognition and stewardship strategies, policies, and procedures, for accounts within portfolio.
  • Maintains accurate, timely and current records within the database outlining the relationship building process to facilitate open communication and a team based fundraising environment.
  • Ensures adherence to the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice and A Donor Bill of Rights and Imagine Canada Ethical Code.
  • Prepares proposals for presentations and solicitations that result in philanthropic gifts and/or sponsorships for all Society products
  • Sets meetings and makes solicitation calls
  • Ensures fulfillment requirements for donors in portfolio in collaboration with Marketing and Communications and other departments
  • Works in compliance with the provisions of The Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, and complies with the Society’s Health & Safety Policy
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • University degree, or certification in fundraising and/or legacy giving, or equivalent work plus development experience and five+ years of progressively responsible revenue development experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Active membership in Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE designation) or working towards the same a definite asset
  • Proven track record of successful revenue development preferably in planned giving • Knowledge of planned giving best practices, direct experience working with donors
  • Demonstrated capacity for teamwork
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Strategic thinker, excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized
  • Drive for results
  • Office environment with occasional requirements to work outside of regular office hours
  • Occasional day/overnight travel
