Main Functions

Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the financial records. This includes providing financial support to the Financial Controller through bookkeeping, payroll and reporting services. The Senior Bookkeeper is a proactive, team-oriented individual with a passion for the mission of Reconciliation Canada.


Position Type: Employee, full time (40 hours per week)

Start Date: November, 2016

End Date: December 31st, 2017 (with possibility of extension)

Location: North Vancouver, BC

Reports to: Financial Controller


Deliverables and Duties

Full cycle bookkeeping – QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online

  • Data entry and bank feeds
  • Account reconciliation and analysis
  • Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable management
  • Sales tax (GST returns, Public Service Bodies Rebate)
  • Full cycle payroll (pay cheques, remittances, account reconciliation, vacation tracking, sick leave, T4s, T4As, WCB, etc.)
  • Internal management reporting, Board reporting
  • Audit preparation

Advanced QuickBooks and QuickBooks Online Usage

  • Applying payments and credits to customer invoices
  • Applying bill payments and credits to vendor invoices
  • Maintain Prepaid expenses and Accrued Liabilities
  • Electronic payments (Interac, TelPay, etc.)
  • Transaction automation (memorized transactions, bank feed automation)
  • Create and update items and payroll items
  • Create and update Sales tax codes
  • Payroll module
  • Sales tax module
  • Adjusting journal entries, as required

Budgeting and Variance Reporting

  • Revenue and expense budgets by Customer/Job and by Program/Project
  • Cash flow budgets
  • Budget variance reporting
  • Create and update multipage, complex budgets in Excel

Contract and Grant Management

  • Record revenue, create invoices, receive payments, monitor restrictions

Job costing / cost allocation

  • Allocate direct costs to Customers/Jobs, Programs and Projects
  • Allocate indirect costs to Customers/Jobs, Programs and Projects

Charitable receipting

  • Receive donations, create receipts, split receipting, etc.

Maintain adequate books and records

  • Source document management, filing and storage
  • Document and maintain financial management and bookkeeping and accounting procedures


  • Comply with internal financial and accounting policies and follow documented procedures
  • Steward a strong culture based on our core values and reflective of our commitment to diversity and inclusiveness
  • Support the team with additional duties as required


Skills and Experience Required

  • Certification or other formal training in bookkeeping, payroll and financial management
  • At least 5 years of full-time experience in bookkeeping
  • Strong computer skills, including QuickBooks desktop & QuickBooks Online, Excel
  • Understanding of
    • Accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations in Canada
    • Provincial reporting requirements for Societies in British Columbia
    • Canada Revenue Agency policies related to Registered Charities
  • Ability to multi-task, analyze, and problem solve in a fast-paced organization
  • Confident working with a wide range of social groups
  • Passion, humility, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
