Community Safety Initiative - Community Safety Outreach Worker
Job Description:
The Community Safety Outreach Worker will provide, through early intervention and active engagement, an informative and solution-oriented connection between Boyle Street Community Services, the people who access services at BSCS and surrounding businesses and residents in an effort to increase the safety and security of all individuals who frequent the area.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Engage in proactive outreach and safety activities in the BSCS centre and surrounding area:
- Perform regular patrols, getting to know the population, their issues, concerns and needs.
- Provide preventive patrol in the adjacent community in order to reduce vandalism, drug and alcohol use, traffic management, assaults, and other actions of anti-social behaviour.
- Collect appropriate data and information for reporting on emerging issues, services needed and for funder reporting.
- Enforce Community Centre rules when circumstances dictate
- Manage and educate volunteers, staff and community members who are participating in the patrols
- Assist community members to learn more about and to connect with the resources appropriate to their needs, both within the community and in the city at large;
- Discuss the concerns and the code of conduct of the local community with BSCS community members in order to help them to become more aware and sensitive;
- Encourage and facilitate BSCS community members participation in developing solutions to their needs and the community’s concerns;
- Advocate to the local community on behalf of our members as needed.
- Identify individuals and groups whose behaviour is unmanageable and work with the Community Safety Liaison Officer to determine the best solution for these individuals or groups.
Connect with the local stakeholders including businesses, EPS, community groups, residents, visitors, and local service providers:
- Get to know leaders, businesses, community league members, associations and groups in order to understand specific neighbourhood issues and how they are impacted by BSCS community members;
- Discuss their concerns around safety and comfort on the streets, in public places and in private establishments;
- Assist them to become more knowledgeable about BSCS community members, their profile, their issues and needs;
- Encourage and facilitate their participation in developing solutions to their concerns and our community members needs;
- Advocate to BSCS community members on behalf of the local community as needed.
Assist the business and residential community to interact and find solutions with our community members:
- Act as a resource for the development of new solutions for the particular needs and concerns of BSCS community members
- Identify to BSCS the needs and concerns expressed by the wider community and our community members for which solutions are necessary and appropriate;
- Identify existing resources, find creative solutions and determine their appropriateness to this population
Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities within the overall scope of the position which the supervisor may assign.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent and at least 1 year related experience;
- Documented proof of a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare Information System check;
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate;
- Training in non-violent crisis intervention;
- Valid driver’s licence preferred.

- Strong leadership and people management skills.

- Have a high level of motivation and enthusiasm.

- Demonstrates commitment and innovation to their work.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of poverty related issues, trends and services particularly in Edmonton is essential.
- Knowledge and experience of Aboriginal culture is desirable.
- Able to use Microsoft Word, etc.
