The Garthson Leadership Centre primarily services community benefit organizations, including charities, associations, crown corporations, community groups and social enterprises. Ethics services are also provided to for-profit companies via EthicScan Canada, where Jane is a senior associate.
Jane directed and regulated horse racing from 2004-08 as a Commissioner of the Ontario Racing Commission, and adjudicated appeals. She was Executive Director of the Ontario Equestrian Federation, and led a very successful turnaround. Jane is a Past Chair and founder of the Ethics Practitioners’ Association of Canada. She was editor of Nonprofit Boards and Governance Review newsletter; contributing editor, Governance, for Canadian Fundraiser; and author of the monthly Ethics Q&A columns for CharityVillage.com. Jane holds an honours certificate in Voluntary Sector Management and Leadership, from York University and has a B.A. in pyschology. Prior to becoming a consultant, she spent twenty-one years managing corporate and line programs in six ministries of the Ontario government.
Since the Garthson Leadership Centre serves primarily the voluntary sector, where resources are always limited, costs are kept to a minimum. The company is committed to giving the very best value to the client. Trusted associates are added to meet client needs on a project by project basis. Teams normally work together virtually, and client services are available through distance technology as well as in person.
The company has been owned and operated by Jane Garthson since 1992.
Jane was part of forming Creating the Future, with a mission of making dramatic community change for the better the norm within ten years, and is part of its Faculty Development Group as well as a regular Twitterchat facilitator. She is an active member of the Canadian Society of Association Executives, Centre for Social Innovation, Institute of Corporate Directors, Ontario Nonprofit Network, EthicsCentre CA, Transparency International and more. Jane is president of an annual nonprofit music festival and part of governing a national awards program for creative excellence.
