Mission and Vision


The mission of the West End Seniors’ Network (WESN) is to improve the quality of life of adults 55 years of age and older by providing social, recreationa, educational and supportive programs and services that foster connection and inclusion in the broader community. 


The vision of WESN is a Vancouver West End community that inspires and supports older adults to live involved, vibrant and fulfilling lives.




Founded in 1984, WESN delivers a range of programs and services for older adults in the West End of Vancouver to reduce isolation and enable them to remain in their homes and community.  WESN has over 800 members and three locations:


  • Barclay Manor (1447 Barclay Street)
  • Kay’s Place (Denman Place Mall, 118-1030 Denman Street)
  • Clothes and Collectibles Thrift Store (Denman Place Mall, 110-1030 Denman Street)


Job Summary


Based at Barclay Manor and reporting to the Executive Director, the Manager of Volunteer Resources and Community Services supports the volunteer programs at all three WESN locations.  The successful candidate will play a lead role in helping WESN maintain and expand our team of approximately 230 active volunteers.  This position supports the mission of the organization by managing WESN’s overall volunteer recruitment, screening, orientation, training and retention strategies.


The successful candidate is also responsible for administering the WESN Life Unlimited suite of services for homebound seniors. These services include:


  • Friendly visiting
  • Daily calling
  • Shopping by phone
  • Accompaniment to medical appointments


Duties and Responsibilities


Management of Volunteer Resources (60%)


  • Develop, maintain and post volunteer position descriptions
  • Conduct initial interview and screening of volunteer applicants
  • Work with staff from all three WESN locations to recruit and manage volunteers
  • Manage Criminal Record Checks for volunteers
  • Organize and oversee volunteer workshops and training opportunities
  • Update and maintain volunteer policies and protocols
  • Maintain volunteer database for all WESN volunteers
  • Track volunteer statistics
  • Participate in regular volunteer team meetings and take meeting minutes as required
  • Plan and implement volunteer appreciation activities, including an annual lunch and seasonal events
  • Recruit volunteers for special events
  • Hold evaluation meetings with volunteers and dismiss volunteers as required


Management of Life Unlimited Suite of Services (35%)


  • Manage the Life Unlimited suite of services for approximately 200 homebound seniors
  • Track statistics for Life Unlimited clients
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with Vancouver Coastal Health and local community agencies
  • Complete annual and interim funder reports


Other Duties (5%)


  • Participate in WESN staff meetings
  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of Barclay Manor
  • Assist with website edits and with social media account management
  • Support other program and service activities and events as necessary




Experience, Education and Training


  • Experience recruiting, training and managing volunteers is essential
  • A certificate in volunteer management or equivalent education is an asset
  • Degree in Gerontology or equivalent education
  • Experience working with older adults with a range of physical and mental capacities
  • Experience with organizing programs and events for older adults
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the not-for-profit sector




  • Proficient with computer programs, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong organizational, communication and facilitation skills
  • Work collaboratively with other WESN staff, programs and services
  • Stay on task in a busy environment with regular interruptions
  • Collaboration to maximize service delivery to older adults
  • Keep records, write reports and navigate databases
  • Present a professional and welcoming image to members, clients and their families
  • Handle stressful situations calmly
  • Be proactive, flexible and positive when faced with a new task or challenge
  • Work with large and diverse groups of volunteers
  • Prepare plain language summary reports, including articles for the WESN newsletter




  • Issues and challenges older adults may experience
  • Current and emerging trends in volunteer engagement and retention


Conditions of Employment


  • Satisfactory completion of a Criminal Record Check.
  • Normal working hours are scheduled between 8:30am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday. However, working hours are flexible depending on operational requirements. The ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required.
