Free Geek Vancouver is an environmentally-friendly non-profit E-Waste recycler and community centre that provides education and training opportunities to 50 volunteers per day. Our work is fun, dynamic, and challenging. This position is part of a worker collective in a consensus-based decision making model. The position oversees all aspects of volunteer planning, coordination, recruitment, support, and training. We seek an experienced, passionate, people-oriented and motivated Volunteer Coordinator. This is a pivotal position for a creative and dynamic team player with excellent interpersonal skills, who wants to make a difference for vulnerable individuals in Vancouver and help save the environment.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, coordinate, and supervise volunteers, interns, and students

  • Conduct volunteer orientations and train volunteers at tasks and stations

  • Improve volunteer induction, coordination, retention, events, and rewards

  • Liaise with volunteers and collect regular feedback

  • Actively identify operational issues and create and enact solutions

  • Maintain and update all volunteer paperwork and documentation

  • Collaborate in a collective management structure with other staff


  • Diploma or degree in human services, social work, or community planning, with emphasis on meeting the needs of vulnerable populations, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check


  • Ability to lead and manage individuals and groups

  • Demonstrate patience and empathy for working with vulnerable individuals, people of all cultures, individuals with disabilities, and youth

  • Ability to identify needs and wants of volunteers and the public, and create opportunities to enhance every volunteer's Free Geek experience

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including ability to motivate, encourage, and guide

  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to and passion for helping individuals and the community

  • Ability to work independently with initiative

  • Ability to work effectively with others to achieve optimal collective results

  • Aptitude with word processing, email, and data entry

Bonus Assets

  • Crisis intervention, non-violent communication, or de-escalation training

  • Computer hardware and software knowledge

  • Current Occupational First Aid certificate
