Free Geek is a nonprofit community organization that reduces the environmental impact of waste electronics by reusing and recycling donated technology. Through community engagement we provide education, job skills training, Internet access and free or low cost computers to the public.



The Production Assistant will assist the Production Manager in all production-related tasks at Free Geek Vancouver.

Participating youth must:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the time of intake;
  • have demonstrated skills achievement at the post-secondary level (this means that you must have more than secondary school achievement);
  • intend to gain ICT skills and knowledge;
  • meet the job requirements of the IHO, which should included stated ICT-related activities;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada and be legally entitled to work in Canada; andå
  • must not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.


  • Building desktop computers
  • Quality controlling desktop computers
  • Testing computer hardware (e.g., expansion cards, peripherals, printers, network hardware)
  • Instructing volunteers on the proper procedures for building, quality controlling, and testing
  • Assisting other staff as necessary


  • Knowledge of computer hardware (i.e., basic principles, identification, operation)
  • Knowledge of computer software (e.g., familiarity with common operating systems, intuitive grasp of software operation)
  • Knowledge of Linux is a bonus
  • Experience assembling and disassembling desktop computers
  • Ability to listen to instructions
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to work independently
  • Punctual

HOURS: 35 hours/week
SALARY: $15/h


Internship provided via the Vancouver Community Network Youth Internships program and funded by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), administered by Industry Canada.
