The Recycling Council of British Columbia is seeking a youth intern to work with the Recycling Council of BC (RCBC) team to create, enhance, and develop content for the RCBC website and social media accounts.


The ideal candidate should be self-directed, able to work independently, as well as part of a larger team. Though not required, an interest in the environment and current waste reduction issues is preferred.


The Recycling Council of BC is looking to mentor an intern who can utilize social media tools and techniques, and marketing skills, to promote RCBC’s pre-existing programs, as well as developing resources for future programming.




RCBC’s outreach and social media programs include developing content for various campaigns, including but not limited to the following:

  • Seasonal Content for Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s, Earth Day, etc
  • Provincially regulated stewardship programs (eg. electronics, small appliance, beverage containers, etc)
  • National Waste Reduction Week in Canada, www.wrwcanada.com
  • FAQ Friday video series
  • Waste Free Thursday (#WFT) Twitter Campaign

These promotional pieces can take various forms, including but not limited to:

  • Media Releases
  • Infographics
  • Videos and video editing
  • Twitter and Facebook content
  • Pinterest and Instagram content
  • Website content
  • Membership and Conference outreach
  • Google Ads
  • B-Roll for videos

Participating youth must:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the time of intake;
  • have demonstrated skills achievement at the post-secondary level (this means that you must have more than secondary school achievement);
  • intend to gain ICT skills and knowledge;
  • meet the job requirements of the IHO, which should included stated ICT-related activities;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada and be legally entitled to work in Canada; and
  • must not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.


Responsibilities within this role may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with building and executing RCBC’s social media strategy
  • Generating, editing, publishing and sharing content (original text, images, video or HTML) that builds connections and engages community members
  • Moderating user-generated content
  • Utilizing calendars and syndication schedules for timely distribution
  • Continuously improving by analyzing data/metrics, analytics, best practices, and making adjustments as necessary
  • Collaborating with other departments (membership, conference etc) to coordinate actions



The candidate should be an energetic, team-oriented person interested in making a difference! This position requires an understanding of and familiarity with various social media platforms. The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • An interest in working with environmental programs
  • Willingness to learn about waste reduction, recycling and composting issues in BC
  • Education or experience in communications, social media, digital marketing or related field
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with MS Office applications and database software
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team

HOURS: Full-time (35 hours/week)
SALARY: $15/h


Internship provided via the Vancouver Community Network Youth Internship Program and funded by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), administered by Industry Canada.
