As a member of the Team, this staff person will have a broad working knowledge of all areas of The Mustard Seed’s Basic Services. This position will support the activities of the following initiatives: the Food Depot, Street Level, Personal Assistance Centre (PAC) and Housing. Reporting to the Street Level Team Leads, the Relief Support Worker is a front-line staff member that responds to the needs of The Mustard Seed community participants on an ongoing basis.



  • Fulfill the mission and values of The Mustard Seed and maintain a high level of  professionalism, respect and      gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community members and visitors
  • Ensure services are delivered in a respectful and safe environment while enforcing facilities rules, expected code of conduct, and building cleanliness at all TMS facilities
  • Communicate issues and concerns to supervisors in a proactive respectful manner
  • Provide Life-Skills education through modelling and in some cases mentoring
  • Brief, de-brief and pray with both staff and volunteer groups when necessary
  • Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of work area
  • Maintain specific records, stats and incident reports on log books and computer files and maintain proper radio communication at all TMS facilities
  • Participate in all staff training and attend monthly general meetings
  • Other duties and site related duties may be assigned when required 



At Street Level

  • Ensure the safe and respectful environment of The Neighbour Centre and the Street Church, for the safety of all community members, staff, volunteers and visitors
  • Follow and implement the policies and practices of both the TMS and TNC Street Level environments 

In the Personal Assistance Centre and in the Food Depot

  • Support the Coordinator in facilitating programs and implementation of policy and procedures
  • Support the daily operations of the specific program and in some cases while supervising volunteers
  • Supervise the filling and organization of the display cases and space available for PAC
  • Receive stock, organize storeroom, fill and distribute hampers
  • Conduct administrative duties as assigned by your supervisor 

In Housing

  • Work directly with residents in permanent supportive housing by providing care
  • Work closely with Housing Support Workers to provide critical information on client care and support through accurate ETO data input and maintenance of client records
  • Maintain the safety and security of the housing environment
  • Respond to crises in a professional, calm, and supportive manner
  • Weekend shifts are 12 hours long which potentially can be divided into 6 hour segments 

Reception at CSC Building

  • Ensure the welcoming and professional reception of people who contact The Mustard Seed by telephone, in person or by email; ensure first contact with clients, potential volunteers visitors and donors is positive
  • Facilitate communication within The Mustard Seed by directing phone calls to appropriate persons and coordinating the efficient distribution of phone messages, mail, faxes and emails
  • Provide administrative support to The Mustard Seed in all areas of the ministry and written communications such as letters, notices and newsletters, spreadsheets
  • Maintain the company database by creating and updating files  for consistency and accuracy, and provide administrative support to administration department as requested
  • Maintain inventory of office, stationery and printer supplies
  • Ensure that office equipment and office systems, including telephone systems, fax machines and photocopiers are operating efficiently and to call service specialists as required
  • Maintain a clean, organized and welcoming reception area and office space
  • Assist in the preparation of weekly courier package to be sent to Alberta office for processing 


  • Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate
  • A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending homelessness in Alberta is essential
  • Organizational skill and ability to carry all and delivery of front line programs
  • Experience working in a volunteer-based  organization is considered an asset
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills
  • A proactive and self-starter individual
  • A team player, who works collaboratively and has a ‘teachable spirit’       
  • Good knowledge of MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to work independently and in a cross-functional team
  • Integrity, discretion and tact dealing with confidential matters
  • Knowledge of mental illness and addictions is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid certification is strongly desired
  • Experience working in a fast pace environment 


  • This is a relief casual position and hours will vary from week to week
  • No guaranteed minimum hours or shifts
  • Days, evenings, weekends, overnight and stat holidays shifts are required and on short notice
  • The position will require ongoing compassionate care, frequent manual labor, conflict resolution and      organizational ability while working directly with risk population in life recovery
  • This position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and      problem solve
  • Moderate physical effort required and considerable periods of standing, walking and siting, indoors and outdoors
  • Employment Security Check and Vulnerable Sector Check is required
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to be in agreement and to sign our statement of faith
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
