Program Summary

The “New Immigrant and Refugee Youth Camp Program” is a unique program offered in partnership with local Edmonton high schools, junior high schools and elementary schools.  New immigrant and refugee youth will take part in diverse activities such as visual and performing arts, field trips, career exploration, life skills, and outdoor/wilderness activities, while practicing their English language skills.
Position Summary

The positions responsibilities include accounting for student participants at all times; during program hours and field trips. The Youth Facilitator is the camp leader/mentor, providing support and leading participants in all program activities as directed by facilitators and camp coordinators. Most of the activity and fieldtrips take place between 8am and 5:30pm. Youth Facilitators will work with the designated schools on a fixed weekly schedule. Contract hours include the activity hours at schools, activity planning, meeting with staff, activity reporting, and other administration support as may be requested.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Mentoring
  •  Build a healthy relationship with each student
  •  Modeling a positive attitude, behaviors, life choices, communication and problem solving skills
  •  Be one of their support networks while going through transitions, life adjustments, and/or difficult times, and assist in expanding their network and resources
  1. Facilitation of activities
  • Plan the activities to meet the program objectives and facilitate the group activities with students
  • Positively motivate and engage students in all activities and assist in preparing and facilitating activities to ensure the success and completion of activity
  • Support guest facilitators in setting up the classroom and classroom management
  • Assist Project Coordinator to arrange fieldtrips and lead the group during the fieldtrip
  1. Administrative support
  • Assist in the distribution, completion and collection of all official forms such as registration forms, evaluation forms
  1. Front line observation
  • Evaluate their progress in English skills, confidence, connecting with people and resources, academic, social and personal developments, and their goals
  • Provide activity reports, videotaping and/or take pictures of the activities and students project for reporting purposes


  1. Experience working with immigrant youth; experience working in a multicultural setting; can demonstrate cultural sensitivity and appreciation of diversity
  2. Demonstrate sociable, outgoing personality, and strong leadership skills.
  3. Demonstrate strong relationship-building skills and problem-solving abilities
  4. Ability to provide mentorship/role modeling to new immigrant and refugee youth
  5. Flexible; ability and willingness to be a team player and work well in group settings, reflecting respect to students as well as fellow team members
  6. Excellent organizational, planning, time-management skills
  7. Strong communication (writing and oral) skills ( knowledge of another language is an asset)
  8. Proficient with MS word, databases, spreadsheets, internet explorer etc.
