Job Description

Summer Student Position at the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (DTES NH)

Community Developer Assistant

Duration: 10 weeks, Full-time 35 hours per week, $13.00 per hour 9-10 weeks over the summer

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide programming and referral for those is poverty, homeless and under-housed, those with mental health, addiction and physical disabilities and seniors from the DTES.
  • Provide referrals and service to new immigrants and refugees in our drop-in programs
  • Provide referrals and services to members of the aboriginal community
  • Assist with community events, including working with local artists and organizations to plan the 150th Celebration of Canada’s Anniversary through our One Community Festival with a focus on social, cultural and historical connections to the community
  • Welcome, provide service and make referrals those new to the community, refugees and immigrants by facilitating events in a variety of NH themes and language classes[Building Inclusive Neighbourhoods, Right to Food, Environmental Justice, etc.]
  • Assist with the Community Drop In at the DTES NH Prepare food in accordance with our Food Philosophy with a focus on healthy eating for Seniors and others living with chronic health problems
  • Update signage to referring agencies and events (programming and general)
  • Assist with Seniors community kitchen programming
  • Assist with Aboriginal community kitchen programming
  • Assist with Kids Kitchen programming
  • Support NH Programming staff and guests such as workshop facilitators/resource people
  • Help with summer tutoring programs
  • Assist with recruiting  volunteers
  • Work with Quebec Education exchange group in conjunction with UBC education program
  • Co-facilitate monthly volunteer training with Volunteer Coordinator
  • Participate in mentoring program and attend staff meetings
  • Complete Incident Reports as required
  • Work effectively, respectfully and collaboratively within the culture of our staff team
  • Assist in the maintenance of an orderly, organized programming space
  • Participate in nutritional outreach program in the Downtown Eastside twice monthly ( Banana Beat and Mobile Smoothie)
  • Make member referrals where appropriate
  • Other tasks as needed to keep programs running smoothly

 

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Understanding and practice of confidentiality and privacy
  • Ability, high energy and enthusiasm to work in a team, solid work ethic with a can do attitude
  • Skill or interest in food, and food security
  • Proven understanding of non-judgmental behaviour
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort working with people of all ages, genders, ancestries, sexual orientations, abilities, occupations and classes
  • Ability to speak French, Cantonese or Mandarin is an asset
  • Understanding of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs
  • Computer, media and IT skills are an asset
  • Would suit  student interested in social sciences, social work, nursing, education or nutrition
  • Must be under 30 years of age and a full time returning student.  Aboriginal, and those with diverse backgrounds and local youth are encouraged to apply

  • Actively participate in weekly mentorship meetings and career planning meetings
