Do you believe that every child has a right to a healthy, stable, home?

Would you thrive on supporting children and families through some of the roughest times in their lives?

Family Services of Greater Vancouver

FSGV is a not for profit agency where we work to inspire and support those in our community who need help to reach their full potential: children are nurtured, youth find optimism, adults feel empowered, and parents make choices that build strong families.

Since 1928, Family Services of Greater Vancouver has been helping families through challenging times. Last year we supported more than 13,000 people to create possibilities for themselves through professional counselling, therapy, education, advocacy, planning, employment support, and other community services.

Join us to build healthy, vibrant, tomorrows for families in our communities!

Project Parent Fraser South

This Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD) contracted program is often the last resort for at- risk families with child welfare concerns. Often navigating intergenerational trauma, many of our clients have either lost their children to care or are on the verge of it. We provide individual, couple and child counselling as well as parent training in hopes of providing these families with tools to create stable, healthy, homes for the children. Outreach is a key component of our work; connecting families with their communities and resources, and collaborating with MCFD. This is a home-based program working in Surrey, Langley, Delta and White Rock.

Position Profile:

This role is more than a counselling role. As the Family Counsellor, you will also be a parenting educator, an advocate, and a liaison between MCFD, the families, our program and community supports. A fierce advocate for the children, you will proactively engage mandated parents to participate in the activities and processes that may enable them to successfully care for their children. You will skillfully navigate MCFD requirements and processes while remaining focused on the best-interest-of-the-child. The work is hard but rewarding and well supported within a strong team, including weekly individual and group clinical supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess family functioning and needs through a variety of methods, including close observation of interactions between parent and child in various environments.
  • Provide individual, couples, family and child counselling; may collaborate with partners in establishing contracts with clients around treatment goals.
  • Parenting education and coaching: provided in-home and in the community.
  • Community outreach: connecting clients with community resources and developing social networks.
  • Liaison with MCFD, other partner agencies, team, families and the community.
  • Reporting: prepare written and verbal progress reports to families and their social workers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Counselling or Social Work
  • MSW or MA, Counselling Psych may be an asset

Experience (Demonstrated Skills, Abilities & Competencies)

3-5 years experience working with children and families in a counselling and/or support role:

  • Providing parenting education and support using a systemic multi-generational framework
  • Working with high-risk families who present a variety of social problems, e.g., drug and alcohol dependencies, family violence, isolation, poverty, child neglect/abuse, emotional and life style difficulties, and intergenerational trauma
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to the needs of children and promote strategies designed to enhance parenting and the parent/child relationship
  • Experience with child welfare system is an asset
  • Experience providing play therapy is a strong asset
  • Fluency in a second language is a strong asset

Required Knowledge

    • Abuse/neglect dynamics, substance abuse issues, and mental health issues in adults and children.
    • Counselling techniques and approaches, including multi-generational systems framework
  • Childhood development and parenting techniques

Additional Requirements:

  • Class 5 license and unrestricted access to a vehicle
  • Criminal Record check

As the ideal candidate, you also bring:

A natural ability to build and nurture relationships across sectors, cultures, and languages in sometimes high stress situations. You navigate politics and conflict skillfully, and thrive in a tight team committed to mutual support, transparency and getting-the-job-done. You’re not an office-dweller, but a proactive, community-centered go-getter. You’re as skilled at caring for yourself as you are at caring for your clients. You know that burn-out serves no one, and you’ve built the personal resilience to balance your work and your life in this field.
