Job Purpose:

To provide information, support, referrals, and advocacy to assist individuals in making positive changes in their lives, in keeping with the Mission, Values, and Strategic Plan of the Boyle Street Community Services.

 

The hours of work 8:30 am -5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Makes contact with individuals and families in Boyle Street Community Services’ drop in and the location of their choice, and assists and supports them in obtaining basic needs (income, shelter, food, clothing, transportation, legal, identification, and medical services)
  • Delivers crisis intervention as needed, including risk assessment and follow-up until the crisis situation has stabilized
  • Assesses clients’ issues and needs; assists and supports clients to develop a case plan and to take positive steps to achieve their goals
  • Makes referrals and advocates on behalf of clients as appropriate
  • Maintains accurate and comprehensive written documentation, according to Boyle Street’s systems and standards, regarding all client interaction
  • Coordinates and case plans with other members of the Adult Services team and other Boyle Street programs
  • Provides guidance, supervision, support, and evaluative feedback for student practicums
  • Connects and collaborates with other partners in the community
  • Contributes to the safety and general environment of the building and surroundings at Boyle Street, including using Conflict Resolution and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention techniques when appropriate

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Degree or equivalent in social services or related field. Candidates without a degree but who have post-secondary education and relevant and related experience will also be considered

Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:

  • Great attention to detail and excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Strong advocacy and case management skills
  • Works with initiative, commitment and enthusiasm
  • Proven ability to work in a respectful and client-centered manner
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Capable of supervising and motivating practicum students and volunteers
  • Able to work effectively as a member of a team as well as independently
  • Flexible and adaptable to change
  • A highly developed sense of humor
  • Able to work in a stressful environment and deal with difficult, sometimes abusive, clients
  • Good working knowledge of Service Alberta, Alberta Human Services, Alberta Health Services and Alberta Justice and Solicitor General procedures, policies, guidelines and practices

Experience and Other:

  • At least 2 years directly related experience
  • Criminal Record and Child and Youth Information Systems check are required
  • Must have valid driver’s licence, reliable vehicle that can be used for work purposes, and clean Drivers’ Abstract
