POSITION SUMMARY:

The Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf is multi-purpose, multi-program facility that functions as a community centre for the Deaf and as a non-profit charitable provider of services for the Deaf.  The organization exists to provide care and opportunities in a communication-rich environment that enhances the quality of life of those we serve. Reporting to the HR Director, the HR Generalist is a key resource to staff and management providing a high level of proactive human resources expertise that supports the employee life-cycle and aligns with the centre’s strategic and operational goals.  Areas of specialization include talent management, health, safety and wellness, HRIS, WSIB while maintaining compliance with local legislation and HR best practices.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Partner and collaborate with managers and staff to understand agency challenges and opportunities and work closely with the HR Director in the development and implementation of people initiatives that builds an agile and adaptable organization undergoing major changes
  • Provide the highest quality of general HR support, advice and expertise, while developing strong relationships with managers and staff in multiple locations
  • Understand, monitor and advise on legislative and/or collective agreement issues in HR matters, ensuring compliance and guidance related to regulatory requirements
  • Oversee the development, maintenance and implementation of internal HR policies, forms and procedures.     
  • Develop, maintain and encourage positive relations between the union and management as well aid in the investigation and resolution to employee relation issues (e.g. employee grievances and/or performance concerns, collective agreement interpretation)
  • Lead and assist in the development and evaluation of programs as well refine and measure the effectiveness of HR processes and/or systems with best practices and leading edge HR techniques
  • Communicate, provides guidance and implement the occupational health & safety wellness policies and program.
  • Participate in the Joint Health & Safety committee
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting
  • Identify and support managers with volunteer and student placements
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding benefit and pension plans as well liaise with insurance brokers
  • Provide assistance to managers submitting WSIB claims and/or staff applying for disability insurance coverage
  • Ensure all HR files, forms, materials are updated and maintained in a secure and confidential manner

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Human Resources or related discipline. Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) certification obtained or in progress
  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive HR generalist experience
  • Experience working in a unionized environment
  • A passion for excellence and commitment to the organization and people we serve
  • Dynamic team player with excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • A broad perspective and integrated knowledge of HR management practices and legislative requirements
  • Demonstrates analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Able to develop, interpret and implement company policies and procedures
  • Able to approach situation from an objective perspective with tact and diplomacy, looking for resourceful solutions to diverse HR issues
  • Highly developed client relations and leadership skills with the ability to initiate projects and collaborate effectively with stakeholders
  • Results oriented, adaptable, well organized and able to balance competing priorities
  • Strong computer literacy, proficiency working with a HRIS, experience with Quadrant Workforce an asset
  • American Sign Language and understanding of Deaf culture an asset  
  • Possess valid Glass G driver’s license to work with clients at different locations
  • French language/LSQ an asset
