Do you have some experience and/or training to work with developmental disabilities, and have a few hours per week availability to work regular shifts in Vancouver? If so, we’d love to hear from you! 
The Developmental Disabilities Association is seeking Respite Caregivers (19 years and older) to work with adults with intellectual disabilities part-time (mostly after school or on weekends, for regular weekly, 3-6 hr shifts). 
Requirements are: valid First Aid CPR, a clear criminal record, 2 work references, some training or experience in a field related to developmental disabilities.



Current respite needs include: 

1) A 45 year year old male with Downs Syndrome (E. 22nd Ave near Fraser Street area) who enjoys Special Olympic sports.  High cognitive and quiet verbal, prefers using gestures.   Independent with personal care but requires prompts to wipe more after a BM and to wash hands. Male caregiver required Thursdays / Fridays (3:30 - 6:30) to attend Special Olympics bowling.

2) A very friendly 55 year old male with Downs Syndrome (Fraser / E. 49th Avenue area) who likes dancing, karaoke and other community-based activities. Good sense of humor, not much of a talker but good receptive skills.  Independent with personal care.  Does best with routine.  Male caregiver required for every second Saturday for 6 hours with respite to take place in caregiver’s home and in the community. 

3) A young 20 year old male with a mild Intellectual Disability (E. 41th & Rupert Street area) who is independent with eating, mobility, good verbal / receptive skills.  Semi- independent with personal care (needs verbal reminders / prompts to wash hands).  Enjoys bowling, basketball, malls, movies, swimming, video games. Male caregiver required (1) day per week:  Saturdays (1:00-4:00).  After June – Thursdays (morning or afternoons). 

4)  A 24 year old male (Yale Town area) who has good verbal, cognitive and receptive skills. Interests include sports (enjoys watching hockey & Basketball); going for walks, library, etc.  Friendly, talkative individual.   Individual has an Intellectual Disability / Cerebral Palsy (no prescribed medication). Individual uses a manual or electric wheelchair to get around and caregiver will assist when necessary.    Male  Caregiver who is available Wednesdays and / or Thursdays from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

5) A young, 24 year old male with Autism (near Nanaimo Skytrain area) who is independent in personal care, eating.  Likes to play video games, listen to music, going for coffee, walks.  Favorite foods are McDonald’s or Vietnamese Pho.  Male Caregiver needed for Tuesdays / Thursdays (10:00 am to 1 pm).  

6) A young 20 year old male with a mild Intellectual Disability / ADHD who enjoys some sport activities and walks.  Independent with personal care (verbal reminders to wash hands).  Friendly individual who is eager to please others.

A young female or male caregiver needed for Tuesdays (3:00- 7:00);Wednesdays (10:00 – 2:00 or 3:00 – 7:00); Fridays (10:00 – 2:00 or 3:00 – 7:00); Saturdays (10:00 – 2:00 or 3:00 – 7:00); Sundays (10:00 – 2:00 or 3:00 – 7:00.)
