Artstart provides preventative after-school and summer programming for vulnerable children and youth that utilizes arts as a means of developing fundamental life skills. Our goal is to provide high-quality programming in order to foster self-esteem and the resiliency of children to ensure their long-term school success. Our curriculum focuses on self-esteem, team building, leadership, healthy relationships, anti-bullying and empathy through arts based classes. The Child and Youth Outreach Worker is primarily responsible for supporting program planning and facilitation as well as engaging with and supporting persons served at our summer camps, which are located in socioeconomically vulnerable neighborhoods.

 

This position is funded in part by the Canada Summer Jobs program.  To be eligible to participate in Canada Summer Jobs, individuals must:

  • Be between 15 to 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment;
  • Have been registered as a full time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full time basis in the next academic year;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and,
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

Hours: 30 hours: Monday to Thursday: For a period of 7 weeks beginning late June; Occasional Fridays and weekends will be required. Must be willing to work flexible hours.

In Your Role You Will

The Summer Child and Youth Arts Outreach Worker will be responsible for planning and facilitating arts based programming with support from ArtStart staff at day camps for children and youth.

  • Support program development and delivery
  • Work with vulnerable youth who are affected by the daily stresses of poverty
  • Connect with and mentor children and youth from a person centered, trauma sensitive approach.

 Education/Experience/Certifications

  • Post-secondary student with experience in Child and Youth Care.
  • Experience or education in the following are an asset: Early Childhood Development or Child and Youth Care, Fine Art or Art Therapy, Human Ecology or Social Sciences.
  • Knowledge and appreciation for the non-profit sector.
  • Experience working with individuals, children, and families of socially, economically and/or culturally diverse groups.
  • Program planning and delivery experience are an asset.
  • Creativity and experience facilitating arts programming is an asset.
  • Intermediate computer skills with proficiency for Microsoft Office suite.
  • A valid driver’s license, registration, insurance and operation of a personal vehicle.
  • Current First Aid/CPR and food safety.
  • Police Information Check and Child and Youth Intervention Record Check.
