The Peer Navigator is a point of contact that provides mental health and addictions resource information to individuals with mental illness, loved ones, physicians, healthcare providers and the community at large. Using their own lived experience and service recipient knowledge of the mental health system, the Peer Navigator assists clients as they seek to self-identify needs and successfully access and navigate community supports and resources. Our ideal candidate is a responsive, flexible, and compassionate individual with sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act and understanding of the scope and challenges of the North Shore mental health system. This position is 10 hours/week and works out of the Kelty Dennehy Mental Health Resource Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to interested individuals in a timely fashion to book meetings
  • Establishes a dignifying and purposeful relationship with the client, and clarifies the role of the Peer Navigator
  • Assists clients to access community integration activities and services
  • Supports clients to advocate for themselves
  • Assists clients in obtaining information and potential mental health services
  • Works with volunteers to support clients when appropriate
  • Identifies legal issues, required/available resources and refers clients to appropriate programs, services, and/or agencies
  • Prepares and maintains written and computerized records and completes other program documentation, including written progress notes and incident reports
  • Maintains an awareness of current community resources including health care services, social, economic, recreational, employment, educational services and resources, and other agencies: utilizes the information to assist the client to access services and problem solves with the client as required
  • Provides weekly statistics to the Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator
  • Provides coverage for other program staff as appropriate and required
  • Other related duties as appropriate and required

Qualifications and Skills

  • Lived experience of accessing the mental health and addictions systems, especially the North Shore 
  • Good understanding of the Mental Health Act 
  • Recent related work experience with an emphasis on mental illness/substance use
  • Diploma in Community Social Service or Mental Health
  • Knowledge of Lower Mainland community resources and programs
  • Thorough knowledge of mental health recovery and harm reduction principles
  • First Aid/CPR 
  • Ability to promote positive change and independence
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training and Suicide Awareness Training are assets
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and appropriate boundaries with clients and their families
  • Completion of a recognized Peer Support Worker training program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; PSACC certification (or in progress) an assett 
  • Understanding and applied anti-oppression practice including an ability to work with a culturally diverse population
  • Second language an asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and organize, prioritize, analyze and problem solve
  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the internet
