Wood’s Homes is a multi-service, non-profit children’s mental health centre based in Calgary. Our over 550 staff and volunteers help provide 35 programs and services for 28,000 children and their families each year in Calgary, Lethbridge, Canmore, Strathmore, Fort McMurray and Fort Smith, N.W.T.

 

Commitment to high-risk adolescents, challenged with some very tough issues, is not easy and the reality is that most problems surface after hours. These are the times when our frontline workers spring into action. Work hours at Wood’s Homes are typically round-the-clock and the type of work we do requires quick thinking, confidence, forgiveness and persistence.

 

We are currently seeking a full-time Aboriginal Liaison Worker to work for Wood’s Homes, providing a resource for Wood’s Homes Staff and Clients. The Aboriginal Liaison Worker will provide education, consultation and examples of cultural practices and assist with treatment services with deemed useful and therapeutic.

The Aboriginal Liaison Worker works flexible weekday office hours as attendance at evening or weekend meetings/events may be required.

 

This position reports to the Team Leader of New Horizon.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Brings together representatives of multiple Aboriginal communities with Wood’s Homes to strengthen relationships and partnership.
  • Promotes cross-cultural understanding by advising agency staff about Aboriginal issues, cultures, trends and training opportunities.
  • Works with Wood’s Homes clients to identify and remove any barriers for support in the agency or community.
  • Works co-operatively with other community agencies to promote awareness of Aboriginal issues and support Aboriginal employment and career development.
  • Identifies and suggests resources for use with Aboriginal clients.
  • Promotes/trains program staff regarding integration of Aboriginal content in programs and resources internally and externally.
  • Promotes and participates in community and cultural engagement activities and events.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Executes other responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • Minimum high school diploma and/or three to five years’ related experience.
  • Respected in the Aboriginal community (Job applicants may be expected to provide references from respected members of the Aboriginal community.)
  • Knowledgeable about local Aboriginal history, cultures, and issues.
  • Knowledgeable about First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities across Canada.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Personal suitability.
