Work with OpenMedia

OpenMedia is an effective, dynamic team leading the charge to protect the possibilities of the open Internet. We believe in the power of the Internet to make the world better. To do that, Internet access must be affordable and fast, personal privacy must be respected online, and free expression must be the default mode of the web.

We are a lean digital rights group that punches above our weight. Our community is changing the way the Internet comes together to defend our digital freedoms— the freedoms that make the Internet the greatest tool for sharing knowledge and culture since humans first put charcoal to papyrus.

And, we happen to be looking for another practical idealist who doesn’t want just any ordinary job.

Job Description

This role oversees the day-to-day health and long-term planning of OpenMedia’s public-facing campaigns and advocacy. This includes management and supervision of our Campaigns Team, as well as high-level oversight of grassroots campaign activities, project management, and email communication activities. By engaging multiple stakeholders both in and outside the organization, the Campaigns Director plays a key role in the development of campaign and media messaging, and the overall direction of OpenMedia’s advocacy profile both internationally and in target regions. They may also act as a spokesperson for the organization at public events, and in the media as appropriate. In this role, you will oversee the creation of powerful digital campaigns, and inspire hundreds of thousands of people to fight for the free and open web.

Here’s who we hope you are:

  • You want to empower people. At OpenMedia, we are passionate about showing what people can do when they stand together. This is your number one priority.
  • You care about the open web. You get fired up about all the weird stuff that makes the Internet so great, and you want to make sure it stays open, affordable, and surveillance-free.
  • You are dynamic. This is a fast-paced environment. Really fast-paced. You can jump between tasks, issues, and communication streams with the elegance of a jazz musician.
  • You know how to prioritize strategically. You have a fine-tuned sense of when it’s worth it to “drop everything,” and are OK with the fact that, some days, an early morning development means you won’t get through a single item you put on your to-do list that day.
  • You are in between two worlds. You have one foot in advocacy, and the other in policy. You are a hybrid–a “pink unicorn”– and you’re passionate about connecting everyday citizens with often opaque policy processes.
  • You are courageous. You’re working with one of the largest digital rights communities in the world, and going up against some of the most powerful government and private bureaucracies on the planet. This takes guts.
  • You can laugh at yourself. Sometimes we make mistakes. And when this happens, we all agree to “fail forward” and support each other. This means you’re collaborative, low-ego, and can bring people together to build a “win-win strategy” for good internal and external alliances.
  • You are “so over” partisan bickering. We don’t just want a seat at the table when government makes decisions; we actively work to put citizens at the centre of government decision-making.

As OpenMedia’s Campaigns Director, you must have:

  • Experience developing and leading impactful and innovative political campaigns, including hands-on experience of online digital campaigning and fundraising tactics and strategy, from concept through execution and follow up.
  • Experience successfully managing and leading a high-performing team, and mentoring and developing key staff.
  • Experience with data-driven decision-making. Deep working knowledge of the technical tools of the trade (CRMs, tracking and analytics, Drupal, etc), as well as a solid working knowledge of industry-standard KPIs, best practices and benchmarks. Able to lead and train on these areas.
  • Expertise in crafting messaging for various media formats (including emails, ad copy, social media, press releases, etc).
  • Experience fostering relationships and collaborating with decision makers, partner organizations, funders, and other relevant external stakeholders.
  • A commitment to a collaborative and inclusive approach to decision making that focuses on enabling the team to achieve mastery, autonomy and purpose over their own work.

You should also have the following qualifications:

  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian and US politics and legislative processes is critical, and EU and UK context and knowledge also desirable.
  • Ability to work remotely with team members around the world.
  • A passionate commitment to the cause of digital rights, and an understanding of the key issues we work on: access, privacy, and free expression.
  • An understanding of the real-life effects of digital rights issues, in particular the ways in which they disproportionately affect marginalised communities with an eye towards intersectional solutions where possible.
  • Knack for developing newsworthy campaigns and generating press coverage to influence campaign impact and wins.
  • Familiarity with user-centric / UX design concepts and frameworks.
  • Savvy with web content management systems – particularly Drupal – and basic knowledge of HTML.

And, for bonus points, you would also be comfortable:

  • Speaking to and meeting with politicians and key decision makers.
  • Teaching your colleagues what you know to help reach our goals faster.
  • Giving and receiving feedback to continually improve and have a greater impact.
  • Brainstorming with some of the smartest and coolest people we know.
  • Identifying opportunities for, and managing, large projects and research reports.
  • Reading, writing, and speaking an additional language.
  • Acting as a media spokesperson across TV, radio, and print/digital.

OpenMedia is committed to fostering a collaborative working environment and to promote opportunities for continuous learning as well as to develop mastery, autonomy, and purpose in your daily work activities. You will find a clearly defined career path with plenty of room to grow.

Although our head office is based in Vancouver, Canada, we can hire in several international jurisdictions and will consider remote working opportunities for the right candidate.

We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce and encourage applications from Aboriginal persons, women, LGBTQ-identified persons, people of colour, and persons with disabilities.

This is a permanent position with a three-month probation period. Salary is commensurate with experience, but we are able to hire in the range of $65-70k per year. We offer a comprehensive, competitive, extended health benefits package.

This position will remain open until Thursday, June 15, 2017. We thank all applicants for their interest in working with OpenMedia. Only those being considered for an interview will be contacted.
