The Utility Person’s work week would consist of either 5 hours a day Monday to Thursday and 10 ten hours on Friday or 5 hours a day Monday to Saturday. Both shift schedules would consist of 30 hours per week. Shift rotation will be required.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Ability to complete tasks efficiently in tight headline
  • Highly responsible and reliable
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment and cohesively as part of a team
  • Ability to remain calm and courteous at all times
  • Uphold Health and Safety standards and be actively involved in maintaining a safe work environment
  • Consistently adhere to Bissell Centre standards and policies and code of ethics
  • Enforce agency policies and protocols as required
  • Standing for long periods of time throughout the shift
  • Able to lift 50 lbs comfortably

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:                

  • Troubleshooting abilities
  • Mop and disinfect floors on an ongoing basis while the Drop-In Centre is in operation
  • Wipe and disinfect tables, chairs, countertops and all reachable surfaces throughout the shift
  • Clean all inside windows regularly
  • Clean toilets, sinks, showers and laundry facilities as scheduled and as required
  • Operate power scrubber as required
  • Keep log books and check sheets up to date and accurate
  • Test and record disinfectant solutions as per targets
  • Maintain and report weekly inventory of supplies and products
  • Be ready, willing and able to work modified hours and shifts due to either general or seasonal demands like Emergency Warming.


  • Furniture and office moving and set up
  • Cleaning of roof and gutter debris including Pigeon droppings
  • Cleaning and/or project preparation such as demolition
  • Light maintenance duties
  • Attending to plugged toilets and floods
  • Clean sidewalks and pathways of snow in the winter months
  • Spread sand and salt to ensure safe passage of staff and the public
  • Graffiti removal
  • Clean exterior windows
  • Cut and rake grass
  • Painting, staining and beautification of property
  • Be physically able and willing to work outside in either hot or cold environments and possess the proper and safe clothing required to complete the tasks regardless of conditions.
  • Any other assistance as requested by the Operations Manager


  • Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions
  • Completion of High School with some secondary education or janitorial training and/or trades
  • Several years of relevant experience and basic knowledge of janitorial duties with some experience in operations maintenance and grounds keeping
  • Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks are required
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core an asset
  • Ability to safely operate power washer, snow blower, power sweeper, lawnmower, leaf blower and lawn trimmer


Physical Aspects of Position (includes but is not limited to):


  • Constant standing and walking throughout the  shift
  • Occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs with careful decision-making on weight lifting
  • Occasional kneeling, pushing, pulling
  • Occasional ascending or descending ladders, stairs and/or ramps
  • Could involve repetitive movements

Miscellaneous Responsibilities:

  • Workload may fluctuate; must be a self-starter
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, waste materials and human pathogens
  • Travel may be involved between Bissell Centre properties
