Overview of the Campus Food Bank Society:


Founded in 1991, the Campus Food Bank Society (“CFB”) is a provincially incorporated society and federally registered charity that provides support to individuals facing food insecurity at the University of Alberta. We are a confidential, not-for-profit organization that provides food hampers to members of our campus community in need, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and their dependents.


We focus on poverty reduction, advocacy, and referrals in order to provide adequate support to our clients. The support and funding from our many generous donors allow us to continue on our mission of eliminating hunger on campus with full independence. With an annual +$100 000 budget, our organization is sustained by a devoted and diverse corps of over 100 volunteers, 2-4 staff members, and between 7 and 12 directors on the board.


We are the first and foremost campus-based food bank in the country, and we exist to ensure that our campus communities have access to healthy food as a right, not as a privilege.




The Board governs and manages the affairs of the CFB, including the development of the organization’s long-term strategic vision. In the spirit of collegiality and cooperation, the directors utilize their diverse perspectives to further the CFB’s mission of reducing food insecurity within the campus community, as well as provide opportunities for volunteers and leadership development.

The powers and duties of the Board include:

  1. hiring employees to operate the Campus Food Bank;
  2. defining the scope of employee's roles and overseeing their performance;
  3. maintaining and protecting the Campus Food Bank’s assets and property;
  4. approving an annual budget for the Campus Food Bank;
  5. investing extra monies;
  6. financing the operations of the Campus Food Bank, and borrowing or raising monies;
  7. approving all contracts for the Campus Food Bank;
  8. appointing legal counsel as necessary;
  9. making policies, rules and regulations for operating the Campus Food Bank and the use of its facilities and assets; and
  10. overseeing the duties of the Executive Director.


Directors are also encouraged to attend community and campus events on behalf of the Campus Food Bank to promote the organization and network.




  • Must have strong team-work and problem solving skills;
  • Previous experience on not-for-profit boards and governance is a preferred asset;
  • Background in poverty reduction, food security, mental health, public health, social justice, aboriginal affairs, or post-secondary environments is an asset;
  • Able to commit to an evening meeting once every 2 months on Thursday nights at 5:30 pm;
  • Be able to attend at least one of the CFB’s major annual events: Trick or TrEAT food drive (late-October), the Fast & the Studious (November), Mac n’ Cheese Gala (February-March), PowerPlay Cup (March), Society Annual General Meeting (March-April); and
  • Candidates able to commit for more than 2 years will be prioritized.


Successful candidates must be willing and able to provide a police information check. The associated cost of obtaining this document will be reimbursed by the CFB.
