Directions Youth Services provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with entry points to access the tools, support, and guidance they need to go about making healthy, positive changes in their lives. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Directions Youth Services consists of:

 

Directions Youth Services Centre provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with a range of services to assist them to access housing, and increase health, life-skills and wellbeing. DYSC also encompasses our housing, outreach and transition to adulthood programs.

Directions Youth Detox offers youth with a continuum of service, which includes outreach, drop-in and assessment counselling and referrals, in-house detoxification, education and groups.

Directions Youth Safehouse is a first stage emergency shelter to assist youth to return to family/extended family and/or access needed transitional supports to independence.

Position Profile:

These are entry level ON-CALL hourly positions reporting to the Manager: Supported Housing and Transition Programs. These positions are located at our undisclosed Safehouse location which is a voluntary co-ed residential program for at-risk youth aged 16 – 18 years who need a safe place to stay. These positions work in a team of two staff members. Relief Youth Support Workers provide care and assistance to youth accessing the Safehouse program. They are responsible for creating a safe and welcoming environment for all youth.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create rapport and trusting, non-judgmental relationships with youth in Safehouse.
  • Maintain facility upkeep including cleaning, laundry, inventory and restocking of supplies.
  • Maintain professional, positive relationships with partners including MCFD and service providers.
  • Maintain accurate logs, record keeping, and data entry related to youth files and statistics.
  • Responsible for reading youth files and ensuring information is accurate, current and clear.
  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of current best practices and available resources.
  • Ensure clear and concise communication and information transfer to colleagues and management including shift change.
  • Monitor petty cash float and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Actively participate in supervision sessions and performance evaluation processes.
  • Adhere to all program and agency policies and procedures.   

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion or in pursuit of Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Psychology or other related degrees/diplomas and/or two years of related experience, preferably in a supportive role with at-risk youth.
  • Current First Aid, FoodSafe Level 1 and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates.
  • Professional verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of issues/needs of high risk and/or street-involved youth.

Working Conditions:

  • Safehouse is a 24 hour intake/response program
  • Willingness and ability to work shift work- including awake overnights, days, evenings, weekends and weekend overnights
  • Must be available to work at least 2 overnight shifts per week
