Directions Youth Services provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with entry points to access the tools, support, and guidance they need to go about making healthy, positive changes in their lives. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Directions Youth Services consists of:

 

Directions Youth Services Centre provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with a range of services to assist them to access housing, and increase health, life-skills and wellbeing. DYSC also encompasses our housing, outreach and transition to adulthood programs.

Directions Youth Detox offers youth with a continuum of service, which includes outreach, drop-in and assessment counselling and referrals, in-house detoxification, education and groups.

Directions Youth Safehouse is a first stage emergency shelter to assist youth to return to family/extended family and/or access needed transitional supports to independence.

Position Profile:

There is an hourly position that reports to the Manager of Supported Housing and Transitions. This position supports youth, 16-19 years old, who are living in independent suites in The Kettle on Burrard. In collaboration with the 10K program coordinator, the 10K Housing Assistance Worker will encourage and support positive youth engagement opportunities through individualized service planning, weekly groups and on-site evening activities.  Youth are referred to this program by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services (VACFSS).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain a safe and positive culture through role modelling and presence on the floor.
  • Ensure a welcoming and respectful environment that reflects the diverse youth population we serve.
  • Assist 10K program coordinator in the assessment of each youth’s readiness for, confidence in and motivation for change.
  • Co-facilitate the floor meetings, encourage peer driven opportunities and support peer mentorship.
  • In collaboration with the 10K program coordinator, plan and facilitate evening on-site life skill workshops and recreation/community based activities.
  • Ensure effective communication and assessment through reporting and log entries, both verbal and written.
  • Maintain facility upkeep including cleaning, laundry, inventory and restocking supplies
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, supervision sessions and performance evaluations processes.
  • Maintain professional and positive relationships with MCFD, other service providers and community partners
  • Responsible for remaining up-to-date on current best practices and available resources.
  • Adheres to the policies and procedures while maintaining professional standards of ethics and confidentiality set forth by FSGV.                                                                                                    

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion or in process of obtaining a 2-year diploma in youth care, related field or 2 years post-secondary in related field.
  • 2+ years experience working with high-risk youth.
  • Current First Aid, Foodsafe Level 1 and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates
  • Professional verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of issues/needs of high risk and/or street-involved youth including harm reduction and low barrier resources.
