Tipi Counsellor, Camp Adventure

 

Location: Kananaskis, Alberta

Mandatory Staff Training: June 22nd – 23rd and June 26th-30th, 2017

Start Date: June 22nd, 2017

End Date: August 22nd, 2017

*Room and Board included during work and training weeks.

Camp Adventure:

Located on 64 acres in the heart of Kananaskis Country and provides residential camping and outdoor experiences for children and their families. Camp weeks are Monday to Friday, providing opportunities for children and youth aged 6-15 years to experience nature through tipi living, teamwork, healthy outdoor activities and time away from technology.

 

Position Summary:

Camp Adventure is looking to fill seasonal full-time Tipi Counselor Positions. Under the guidance and training of the Senior Camp Staff and the Camp Adventure Coordinator, the Tipi Counselor is responsible for working directly with campers and assisting in program areas. This position involves living in a tipi with another counsellor and up to 10 campers, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being at all times throughout the week.

General Responsibilities:

  • Identifying and managing any risks to a camper’s emotional or physical safety.
  • Being familiar with all camp policies and procedures, safety rules, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintaining a high level of confidentiality concerning camper privacy.
  • Being knowledgeable about tipi living and ensuring responsible fire management.
  • Teaching respect and care for the camp’s natural environment, care of facilities and equipment.
  • Continual role-modeling of positive behavior for campers, while displaying consistently positive behavior and communication.
  • Properly documenting any incidents, disclosures.
  • Acting in loco parentis.
  • Ensuring 24 hour supervision of all campers.
  • Supervising daily routines, including but not limited to hygiene, meals, sleep etc.
  • Ensuring campers requiring medications or treatment are visiting the Camp Medic when necessary.
  • Assist and actively participate in program planning and delivery in the areas of; Archery, Canoeing, Waterfront, Wellness and Restoration, Environmental/Wilderness Education, Outdoor Living Skills and Arts and Crafts.

Qualifications:

  • Completed, or working towards a degree/diploma in the field/s of Recreation, Education, Social Work, Childcare or related field is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Skill specific certifications (for example NLS, Paddle Alberta/Canada, Outdoor Council of Canada, etc.).
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp.
  • Experience evaluating, leading and supervising programs.
  • Experience living/working/recreating in a wilderness environment.
  • Proof of Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search required for employment.
  • This is an active, physical job that requires the employee to have the ability to maintain a level of physical fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties (including things like lifting and running)-you must be able to participate fully with the children. We all play here!

 

* Please Note: Successful candidates will complete criminal record check and child intervention record check at the time of new hire paperwork.  A criminal record check and child intervention record check dated within 6 months of the interview date will also be accepted.
