This two year term position has your name on it if you want to help raise families out of poverty; are a seasoned veteran of community work; have a deep understanding of community economic development and issues of poverty; and possess a proven ability to coordinate complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives!


The Coordinator will work with multiple partners and steering committee members who are committed to achieving far reaching and measurable goals to demonstrate a sustainable community. The position supports various groups, partners and committee members from Abundant Communities Edmonton, Bissell Centre, City of Edmonton, E4C, local businesses, community leagues cultural groups, faith-based organizations and others.  You will support, coordinate and oversee the following functions:

  • Animating (organizing to Identify local gifts and talents, needs and desires of people, families and organizations)
  • Brokering (matching up gifts and talents with needs and desires of people, families and organizations)
  • Coordinating (coordinating the steering committee, the working groups, and the activities that arise from the brokering)
  • Transforming ( building relationships, sharing information, translating and interpreting local community information and needs, challenging and changing “business as usual” approaches within and among organizations and systems)
  • Administering (managing database, emails, passwords, updating calendars;sending out minutes and notifications)In addition to experience in the functional areas described above, qualified candidates will possess outstanding relationship building skills, strong written and verbal communication skills and be results oriented. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and social media platforms is required. Advanced education, database experience and experience in community economic development, human/social services, or a related field is preferred.

You will work from the United Way office, however, travel to five North East Edmonton neighborhoods will be required and access to reliable transportation (vehicle or bicycle) will be required. Preference will be given to candidates who reside in North East Edmonton (postal code T5Y).


The position reports to United Way and is accountable to the co-chairs of the Communities United Steering Committee. A competitive pay and benefits package is available.  The position scheduled to start on August 1, 2017.  


Communities United involves neighbours, community organizations, and local partners sharing time, talents and efforts in five North East Edmonton communities (Bannerman, Clareview, Fraser, Hairsine and Kirkness). The primary objective of this work is to build inclusive communities where diversity is celebrated, people care for one another, and families live healthy, safe and financially-secure lives. While raising large numbers of households above the poverty line is the end, Community Economic Development is the means.
