Prospect Research Analyst

Department of Advancement Services

Are you an intellectually curious and creative thinker interested in working with a team of experienced analysts to support the work of the Office of Advancement at Queen’s University?

Reporting to the Prospect Research Manager, the Prospect Research Analyst is responsible for identifying potential volunteers and major/principal gift donors for the University (including alumni, friends, corporations and foundations); for conducting related detailed research using on-line databases, in-house files, library references, and other public sources of biographical, corporate, foundation, and financial data; and for providing an analysis of findings in the form of briefing notes, profiles or summary reports.

As the Prospect Research Analyst you will:

  • Identify prospective donors and volunteers by incorporating the use of database segmentation analysis, external resources, electronic screenings and peer-review/focus group results.
  • Conduct detailed research on select major gift individuals, foundations and corporations; compile into well-written and insightful research deliverables for communication with Advancement staff and the broader university.
  • Provide analysis of the gift capabilities, interests and propensity of prospective major gift donors to the University.
  • Act as a research lead in regional and individual/faculty strategy development meetings.
  • Prepare one-off, high level reports for direct submission to senior administrators on high-level fundraising calls.
  • Judge the reliability and accuracy of sources of information, and analyze and interpret available information to determine its relevance for inclusion in prepared reports and presentations.
  • Review media sources for information that might have a direct effect on the advancement effort of the University.
  • Review and recommend print and electronic resources that will enhance research capacity.
  • Develop meaningful, collaborative relationships with frontline fundraisers and other external groups with the goal of assisting in prospect identification, qualification and strategy.
  • Provide reference instruction to Advancement staff on the use of database and Internet resources.
  • Adhere to ethical and confidentiality guidelines of both the University and the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA).
  • Provide back-up coverage for the other Prospect Research Analysts.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned and in support of the unit and department.

The Prospect Research Analyst also calls for:

  • University degree required, preferably at the honours level.
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in an institutionally relevant setting; experience working in a fundraising environment preferred, but not required.
  • Proven experience with research methodologies, biographic/reference materials, library resources, on-line databases and the Internet. Strong IT competence and the ability to learn new software applications required.
  • Proven “hands on” experience in project management, with an understanding of project management principles, practices, techniques and tools.
  • A solid track record in data analysis, reporting, and working with large data sets.
  • Experience creating and developing high level briefing notes and reports.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Queen's culture and organization will be considered an asset.
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
