Position Summary:

The Youth Addictions Counsellor's core responsibility is to support the Clinical Counsellor in the delivery of treatment and care of youth receiving day/evening/weekend intensive Substance Use treatment services in their home communities within the Fraser Valley. These services consist of 4 separate 5 week long groups in different communities within Fraser East and also incorporates time between groups for further planning and follow-up. The Counsellor helps organizes and supports facilitation of individual, group and recreation services primarily to youth aged 13 to 18 who experience substance misuse problems in conjunction with complex challenges in other life functioning domains. Typical tasks include connecting to substance use professionals in various communities to establish mobile programming sites, orientation of new referrals, participant assessment, referrals out, and collaborative development of service goals, training and support to graduates.


This position works with a Clinical Addictions Counsellor as well as peer leader to assist the program operation. The Youth Addictions Counsellor will assist in developing and implementing program components consistent with the guidelines of the D.E.W.Y. manual. This role requires a sound understanding of both normal and delayed or adaptive development, behaviour, barriers, addictions theory, motivational theory and the effects of abuse. Specific skills in recreational activities and life skills instruction are also required.



The practice of the Youth Addictions Counsellor consists of the 12 Core Functions including screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counselling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, report and record keeping, and consultation with other professionals. Referrals are made where necessary to co-occurring disorders therapists. The Youth Addictions Counsellor integrates program mission, goals, and treatment philosophy with evidence-based practices. This ensures consistent quality and sustainable client care; continued systematic and planned professional development; and cultural competencies which respond to clients' diverse community needs.


Primary Duties:

  • Following the direction of the Clinical Counsellor in connecting with service providers in primarily Fraser East to establish locations and willing youth to join the 5 week DEWY program.
  • Help support the Clinical Counsellor in running focused group treatment using psycho education and process orientation as well as evidence-based practices including Mindfulness-based Relapse Prevention, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma Informed Practice, Circle of Courage and others. Individual sessions may be used to supplement group treatment
  • Utilize sound knowledge and understanding of complex interactions between mental health challenges and substance use and is able to conduct treatment in an effective, well-balanced manner that addresses these concurrent challenges.
  • Have and utilize a thorough understanding of normative development, as well as common developmental challenges and adaptations among substance using youth.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to balance the physical and emotional safety of individual youth while also maintaining the physical and emotional safety of the group.
  • Consult regularly with team members, case management services, clinical supervisor, and manager regarding treatment progression for participant(s).
  • Assist participants in building motivation toward change and in strengthening commitment to engage in and maintain change; understand processes for facilitating change; develop strategies for working with clients at different levels of readiness for change; use of empathic counselling skills; understand strategies to address movement away from change, discord and ambivalence; collaborative development of change plans.
  • Assist clients with behavioral change. Professional skills and training include modalities that provide intervention using acceptance and mindfulness.
  • Organizes recreational and life skills programming


Work Conditions:

  • Travel between programming sites in the community
  • Hours – late afternoons ,evenings and weekend


Academic and Job Experience Required:

  • BSW or BA in Psychology, Social Work or related field or equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year in substance-abuse treatment required.
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced environment with excellent communications skills.


Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Records Check including the vulnerable sector
  • Valid Class 5 (4 preferred) Driver’s License, Use of Own Vehicle with Reimbursement
  • Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Basic Computer Skills



Desired Requirements:

  • Learning Disabilities Training including FASD, ADHD, Early Childhood Education, Special Needs Specialized Training and Experience in Health Promotion and/or Adolescent Alcohol and Drug Treatment
  • Group Work Experience
  • Substance Abuse Counselling training and other certification in recreation or arts


Salary Range:     $22.74/hour – $25.88/hour, plus a comprehensive benefits package
