Realize (formerly the Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation - CWGHR) is a national charitable organization working to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV and related conditions through rehabilitation research, education, and cross-sector partnerships. Our members are individuals and organizations that have an interest in HIV, disability and rehabilitation. These include: community-based HIV/AIDS, disability and rehabilitation organizations; national professional associations and individual clinicians; unions; private-sector companies; people living with HIV and other disabilities; health care, social care and human resources professionals; and other people who are interested in HIV, disability and rehabilitation.

 

Realize focuses on four key areas for people living with HIV and other episodic disabilities: HIV and aging, HIV and rehabilitation, labour force participation and income support, and mental health, which are all important components to overall well-being.

 

The governance of Realize is undertaken through a national volunteer Board of Directors. The overall operational work of Realize is managed by an Executive Director in consultation with the Board of Directors and national membership.  Realize was formed in 1998 and its office is located in Toronto.

 

Position Overview

The Fundraising and Engagement Officer – a new position within the organization -  will be responsible for developing, coordinating, executing, and evaluating the fundraising program for Realize. The successful candidate will have a track record of performance and a strong knowledge of best practices in fundraising, particularly in the areas of grant writing, donor cultivation and donor events. This position is well suited for a ‘go getter’ who is also prepared to be very hands-on in all aspects of fundraising and stakeholder engagement.

 

The Fundraising and Engagement Officer will report directly to the Executive Director. She/He/They will be supported by and work closely with other relevant staff e.g. Program, Administrative, Finance etc.

 

 

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

Program Planning and Strategy Development (20%):

  • Work closely with Executive Director, Board of Directors and other volunteers (such as the Development Committee and Special Events Committee) to further develop and implement the fundraising program
  • Develop annual and multi-year fund development plan that delivers on overall organizational goals and objectives for flexible and restricted funding
  • Guided by the organizational goals and objectives, identify appropriate fundraising strategies and tactics to meet established fundraising goals and objectives

Relationship Building and Engagement (50%):

  • Identify and qualify prospective sources of funding support, including individuals, corporations and foundations
  • Implement and oversee customized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of funders and donors
  • Review and update the organization’s Case for Support
  • Support stakeholder communications strategy, ensuring that fundraising and engagement messaging is incorporated into all Realize’s communication online and offline channels (Annual Report, brochures, E-Updates, website and social media)
  • Secure funding by writing compelling and effective funding proposals targeting appropriate government programs, foundations and other potential funders
  • Plan and implement cultivation, stewardship and fundraising events

Program Monitoring and Evaluation (15%):

  • Monitor and measure fundraising performance against plan/budget
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director and Board of Directors monitor, measure and report on program and strategy effectiveness using identified performance and key performance indicators (KPIs)

Program Administration and Other (15%):

  • With the Manager, Program Support, create and monitor an annual budget for development initiatives, reviewing financial results and projections on a regular basis
  • Ensure key activities, including engagement activities, are captured and tracked; maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the donor database
  • Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, support, encourage and foster efforts to establish a culture of philanthropy within the organization
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in fundraising and stakeholder engagement; CFRE designation an asset
  • A record of building and implementing an annual fundraising program as well as success in soliciting funders at various giving levels, including those with capacity to make five/six figure investment
  • Demonstrated experience in writing grant proposals and creating fundraising materials
  • Knowledge/understanding of HIV, other chronic diseases and /or rehabilitation services is an asset
  • Experience working in a small shop environment is an asset
  • Knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines, Canadian Anti-Spam legislation (CASL), Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Codes of Conduct and other guidelines and best practices governing non-profit organizations ensuring that all fundraising activities and policies comply with ethical principles and legal standards
  • Ability and willingness to work nights and weekends depending on scheduled events
  • Ability to travel within Canada and Internationally, as required

 Competencies

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Keen attention to detail including superb proofreading skills
  • Demonstrated project management/coordination skills, including ability to concurrently advance work on multiple projects
  • Ability to adapt or create new solutions to address specific situations

Guided by priorities and direction, take appropriate action and initiative to ensure delivery of goals and objectives
