Background:

Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN) has been active in Edmonton since 1981 and works with individuals of all ages and families coming to Edmonton from every part of the world. The majority of those people are sponsored refugees, landed immigrants who have been in Canada five years or less but also included are people who have become citizens, refugee claimants and visitors. In a year, we serve individuals and families from more than 100 places of origin.   Services are available in both official languages and in about 30 other languages.

 

 

Summary of Function:

The Social Worker serves refugees/immigrants facing complex life situations that impede integration by providing flexible and timely support to immigrants/refugees from all areas of the world. Working as part of a team, the Social Worker facilitates the successful settlement and integration of refugees/immigrants through comprehensive needs assessment, resource provision, and supportive referrals. The Social Worker is welcoming and brings linguistic ability in languages other than English or French, as well as excellent inter-cultural sensitivity in order to understand fully their client’s needs and aspirations.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support families in relationship building and goal planning by setting goals with the families and supporting them through to achieve their goals.
  • Create and implement meaningful opportunities to engage families by acting as a systems connector. This includes advocating for families in crisis, connecting them to appropriate community resources and supporting them with other services in the community, both government and community services
  • Provide ongoing support to children and families through home visits, telephone calls, and other support strategies that best meet the needs of the family.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a holistic team with other members of EMCN staff in the provision of services for immigrant and refugee families.
  • Advocate for Newcomers e.g. with Capital Region Housing, Income Support, landlords
  • Makes supported referrals to other agency-internal, or external supports
  • Provides service off-site in locations such as:
  • Alberta Works
  • Capital Region Housing
  • Women Shelters
  • Law Courts
  • Schools
  • Private home visits or at other locations
  • Document all interactions, demographics, statistics and case notes on the agency database and to provide intake, needs assessment and action plans that support newcomers in settling and participating in the community.
  • Respect confidentiality of clients when it comes to sharing information and file storage.

Skills and experience:

  • At least four to five years of community experience working with families.
  • Have experience working with families with complex needs
  • Language proficiency in English, additional languages will be an asset.
  • Have strong knowledge of mental health challenges faced by immigrants and refugees
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources, including in-depth understanding of family support needs for parents and youth.
  • Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence.
  • Good understanding of cultural competency and experience working with diverse population.

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum post-secondary degree in Social work or related Human Services fields. Bachelor of Social Work is preferred.

 

Job Requirements

  • Police Criminal Record check and CWIS (Child Welfare Information System) check
  • FOIP Training
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with insurance coverage
  • Available for occasional evenings and weekend work.
