The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.



Mental Health Counsellor at the Shelter provides counselling to clients, individually or in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, or making changes. Furthermore, the counsellor guides clients in the development of skills or strategies for dealing with their problems and perform crisis interventions with clients. The counsellor develops and implements treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge.



  • Ensure that assessment of clients’ mental health needs is completed and is followed by referrals to receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment;
  • Ensure that clients receive direct care in relation to addiction, mental health, health and wellness issues;
  • Ensure that ongoing assessment and counseling support of clients is carried out;
  • Ensure proper documentation of client interactions, client referrals and client progress on the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), and ensures that applicable regulations (FOIPA, HIA, PIPPA) are followed;
  • Facilitate emergency interventions in collaboration with other departments, as needed;
  • Facilitate counselling student practicum placements at the Shelter;

Administrative responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the Mustard Seed and with external agencies;
  • Build a comprehensive library & knowledge-base on community resources related to addictions;
  • Ensure that tracking of statistics and preparation of reports is completed as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Masters Degree in either Psychology, Counselling or Social work
  • Eligibility to pursue registration with either the ACSW, CAP, CCPA, or will be registered within 2 years after staring in the position;
  • Minimum two years’ experience working in Mental Health;
  • Experience working with people with addictions and or mental health, and experiencing homelessness;
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with members of the multidisciplinary team, and community agencies;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Calgary’s community (mental) health and addiction resources, and adept in navigating those systems;
  • Knowledge of FOIP, HIA, and PIPPA;
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team & accomplish goals;
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Programs); experience with Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) an asset;
  • Good organizational, time management skills and advocacy skills;
  • Willing to assent to The Mustard Seed Statement of Faith


  • This is a Part Time position located at the Foothills Shelter
  • Working in and amongst a diverse group of individuals;
  • Fast paced and demanding work environment;
  • Employment Security Check is required
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to be in agreement and to sign our statement of faith
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
