OPACC is recruiting for our Board of Directors!

Would you like to help families of children with cancer in Ontario? Ontario Parents Advocating for Children with Cancer (OPACC) is an independent registered charity whose overall goal since our founding in 1995 is to be the parent voice for families with children diagnosed with cancer across the Province of Ontario. You can learn more about OPACC by exploring our website at www.opacc.org

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for OPACC. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization. The Board of Directors plays a key leadership role to ensure that we continue to implement strategic directions while raising the funds necessary to advance support and care. Becoming a Board Member is a serious professional commitment and we are looking for dedicated volunteers who are 100% up to the task of managing our charity in a rewarding opportunity to give back to families in need of support.

Ideally, our Board will be comprised of a team of leaders with combined experience in fundraising, finance, healthcare management, public relations, law, corporate governance, strategic planning, and senior management in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Please note that Board Members are unpaid volunteers.

Requirements of Board membership:
  • Commitment to the mission of the organization.
  • Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of Board governance: policy, finance, programs, personnel, and/or advocacy.
  • Willingness to serve on committees.
  • Attendance at regularly scheduled board meetings.
  • Attendance at meetings of assigned committees.
  • Attendance at Annual General Meetings.
  • Support of special events.
  • Support of, and participation in, fundraising events.
  • Financial support of OPACC by becoming a monthly donor at whatever level you are able to contribute.
Term
Board members are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting to serve for a one year term, with the opportunity to renew for up to 4 additional terms. Members may be released at the end of the elected term, by resigning, or according to OPACC's bylaws.

Time and Financial Commitments
Board members are expected to attend Board meetings via teleconference on a Saturday morning (exact dates to be determined in advance) in February, April, June, September, and November. Board members are encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting that takes place in June at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in-person whenever possible. Board members are required to attend at least half of the annual Board meetings.

In addition, the Board strives to meet monthly via teleconference for quick, half-hour updates.

Board members are encouraged to attend special events on behalf of OPACC whenever possible and to do committee work.

Members of the Board are asked to contribute financially to the organization by becoming a monthly donor at whatever level they are able to contribute.

If you have any questions, or would like to review our Board bylaws, current Strategic Plan, Key Messages, Privacy & Confidentiality Agreement, Code of Conduct Pledge, Conflict of Interest Declaration policy, social media policy, and/or photo waiver prior to applying, please do not hesitate to contact Sarai Porretta at . For those who cannot currently commit to full Board membership, OPACC also offers short-term opportunities for committee memberships to collaborate on working groups and specific projects (please contact for details).
