The Pathways to Education Program™ is a national program, operating in 18 communities across Canada and provides a comprehensive set of academic, social, financial, and individual supports to youth. The primary goal of the Pathways to Education Program Vancouver is to enhance the educational success of youth living in the Downtown Eastside and Strathcona community.


The Pathways program partners with the Our Place Graduation Strategy, a place-based approach to improving the educational success of children and youth living in Vancouver’s inner city.


Position Summary:

The Youth Outreach Worker is responsible for providing individualized case management to support youth succeed both academically and socially. This position involves developing relationships with youth as well as liaising with family members, school personnel, and community staff to support the educational needs of youth. In addition, youth outreach workers will support the after-school tutoring programming based in the community. The successful candidate will be dynamic, skilled and experienced in connecting with diverse communities, including Aboriginal, newcomer, and LGBTQ youth to ensure they feel safe, supported, and connected. This position reports to the Program Supervisor of the Pathways Program.



1) 1 to 1 Case Management:

  • Develop plans in collaboration with youth and appropriate adults (i.e. Parents, teachers & other school staff, community partners) to address the educational needs/goals of individual youth
  • Monitor youth progress, engagement and participation in the program and liaise with program staff
  • Maintain regular contact with families and facilitate their involvement in the educational goals and plans for their child
  • Provide advocacy and support in order to assist youth access information and support services


2) Develop supportive and engaging relationships with youth:

  • Work with youth to identify goals, strengths, issues and students concerns, while supporting their participation in tutoring, mentoring, school and community activities

 3) Develop resources and enhance tutoring program

  • Develop diverse resources that address specific learning styles, abilities and need
  • Support youth to fully engage in tutoring
  • Provide support to volunteers to engage with youth and effective tutoring techniques


Dimensions of Work

  • Primary interface is directly with youth and volunteers in the Pathways program
  • Direct reporting relationship to Program Supervisor
  • Coordination and sharing information with relevant program, school, families and community staff


Work Conditions

  • Hours – early afternoon into evening time and occasional weekends.
  • Flexibility is required as there may be a need for earlier or later hours depending upon circumstances to offer support to youth at key times.
  • Travel between multiple sites in the community


Academic and Job Experience Required:

Post-secondary degree in Education, Social Work Psychology, or Child and Youth Care Diploma.  Plus 2 years’ experience working with at-risk youth populations, or a combination of related education and work experience with youth.


Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Records Check including the vulnerable sector
  • Standard First Aid and CPR


Desired Requirements:

  • In order to meet the needs of our youth and families, we strongly encourage candidates of Aboriginal background and/or with verbal and written fluency in Vietnamese, Cantonese, or Mandarin to apply.
  • Experience working with youth and families in the Downtown Eastside / Strathcona community
  • Experience providing 1-to-1 case management in an education context
  • Experience working in programs supporting the educational success for youth in this community
  • Experience and/or knowledge of working with the public school system (grade 7 -12)
  • Specific training and/or experience with youth with special needs or new language learners
  • Experience working with and guiding volunteers
  • Knowledge of community and social services
