While WJS serves individuals in many communities across Canada this opportunity is in Cold Lake, Alberta. Nestled on the shore of Alberta's seventh largest lake, a three hour drive north east of Edmonton and 20 minutes west of the Saskatchewan border, Cold Lake is home to over 15,000 residents. The Program: 

The Career & Lifestyle program provides opportunities for an adult male with to participate in the community and enjoy a range of leisure activities. Day services are a community-based mix of employment preparation and community involvement. The individual in care is coached in life and coping skills and acquire the tools they need to enjoy life.

 

Activities and programs are both community and home based. Volunteer, health, safety education and other activities enhance quality of life and grow independence. Clients receive support in:

  • Engaging the community: self-help and self-care skills; developing the ability to interact with others, making one’s needs known and responding to instructions; community integration skills such as accessing community services.
  • Guiding Career Development: job coaching and placement supports. WJS Staff focus on self-sufficiency and positive self esteem by working closely with community employers and service groups to match employees with employers.  

 

Schedule:             

One (1) part-time position with a flexible schedule of five (5) hours per week, when supports are needed.

 

What you will do as a Disability Service Worker job in Cold Lake, AB:

The Disability Services Worker (DSW) for the Career & Lifestyles program is a front-line community disability services role that supports and facilitates the development of skills and competencies that will assist a young male client to pursue and fulfill his goals, objectives and aspirations. The primary activities and tasks of the role are:

  • Implement person-centered plans designed to assist and support individual with developing and achieving personal goals through the development of basic living and life skill development. 
  • Assist and support the individual in establishing and maintaining shared, respectful relationships within the community, with a view to meaningful participation and inclusion. This includes transporting to and assisting individual in participating effectively in employment, volunteer, recreational and other social settings.
  • Model socially appropriate behaviours (for both the individual and the community) and assist/encourage the individual to make/maintain appropriate community connections.
  • Participate and support planning as well as safe transportation of the individual to vocational, recreational, leisure activities and encourages opportunities for social interaction within communities.

 

As an ideal candidate you possess:

  • Minimum Grade 12
  • Prefer Diploma in Disabilities Studies, Degree in Social Work, Human Services or equivalent
  • Must have valid class 5 driver license with clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Abuse Protocol, Medication Administration, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Crisis Prevention Intervention Foundations and Disabilities Training

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • 1 year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities; prior experience working with people with drug addictions is an asset
  • Ability to meet the requirements of Service Agreement of individual in service
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player, capable of working without direct supervision
  • Calm, confident and capable to function in a crisis
  • Patient, motivates others and is a positive role model.
