Wildlife Rescue Association of BC is seeking an energetic, organized, and highly practical Grounds & Maintenance Coordinator. The coordinator plays the primary role in overseeing routine preventative maintenance and repair, and upkeep of the gardens and outdoor areas, for Canada’s busiest wildlife rehabilitation centre. Leadership, confidence, a wide range of practical skills, good organization, and the determination to steadily improve Wildlife Rescue’s site, are essential to this role.

Wildlife Rescue’s site on the edge of Burnaby Lake, includes Hospital and Business Operations buildings, a range of outdoor enclosures and storage areas, a wildlife habitat garden, and other outdoor and garden areas. We are planning substantial upgrades on the site, to enable us to continue serving 5,000 injured, orphaned and polluted wild birds and small mammals every year. Having someone coordinate the upkeep and development of our site are key components to our success.

Responsibilities:

  • contributing to a workplace culture of self-awareness, respect and appreciation in relation to staff, volunteers and members of the public;
  • developing and implementing operational plans;
  • planning and overseeing the performance of preventative maintenance, routine repair and emergency repairs of all buildings and equipment (major or specialized tasks will be contracted out);
  • planning and overseeing the construction of new wildlife buildings, structures, caging and other rehabilitation materials as needed, according to the needs and specifications of the Wildlife Hospital management (major or specialized tasks will be contracted out);
  • planning and overseeing maintenance and seasonal activities to ensure effective upkeep of the grounds and garden;
  • training, coordinating and supervising Grounds and Maintenance volunteers, including the organization of corporate volunteer groups;
  • assisting with the recruitment, recognition and appreciation of volunteers in collaboration with the volunteer coordinator; and
  • selecting and coordinating contractors on site, in collaboration with the Operations and Finance Director.

 Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven success working with staff and volunteers in a small organization setting
  • Collaborative and empowering approach and management style
  • Ability to foster a safe, healthy, positive and respectful environment
  • Minimum of 2 years’ related experience in skilled trades and/or site maintenance
  • Previous experience and confidence in a supervisory position
  • Knowledge and experience in compliance with building codes and legislation
  • Experience in identifying and mitigating risk
  • Demonstrated ability in a wide range of grounds and maintenance skills such as carpentry, plumbing, mechanics, janitorial, electrical, use of manual and mechanical tools, landscaping
  • Familiarity and comfort in using Office applications - Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Good communication skills including the ability to speak, read and write in English.
