The Indigenous Initiative – Iiyaki’kimaat Programmer is responsible for working alongside the other Indigenous Initiatives staff to plan and implement creative, culturally relevant programs under the Iiyaki’kimaat program design for Indigenous males aged 12-21. The Iiykai’kimaat program design is based on the Circle of Courage Core Areas: Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity.  The Iiyaki’kimaat  Programmer will ensure that the programs and services provided are relevant to the needs of the community and that all components of the program are effectively integrated with other BGCC programs and are consistent with the mission, values, vision, and strategic plan of BGCC. The part-time hours will range from 15 to 20 hours per week.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Ensure for the safety and well-being of all children and youth in the program, including group and/or individual behavior management and support
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities based on assigned core program area with a focus on the circle of courage framework, self-esteem, leadership, identity and social skills
  • Ensure programs reflect cultural diversity in the community and include cultural awareness components
  • Create opportunities for all children, youth, and families
  • Work with other Indigenous Initiatives staff to provide appropriate referral supports to Indigenous youth and their families
  • Assist current BGCC Indigenous Initiatives staff to plan, implement and deliver our Iiyaki’kimaat program for youth aged 12-21
  • Assist with recruitment and marketing of programs in the community, schools, and at events
  • Maintain specific program and member statistics, as well as perform other administrative duties as required including monthly reporting of program statistics and qualitative content
  • Report to and work with Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator to ensure relevant program costs are tracked, reported and followed
  • Ensure all licensing standards are met as per Government and CARF requirements
  • Maintain program budget and expenses
  • Work with other Indigenous Initiatives staff to provide appropriate referral supports to Indigenous youth and their families
  • Support larger Club and Agency initiatives and events
  • Ensure for cleanliness of facility and van, and proper care of equipment and supplies
  • Perform administrative reporting and other duties as required
  • Diploma in Social Work, Education, Child and Youth Care, Recreation, Kinesiology, or a related discipline; equivalencies will be considered; 1-2 years’ experience in delivering social, educational and/or recreational programs to at risk children, youth, and/or families in an urban or rural Indigenous setting
  • Strong program planning and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Indigenous community, culture and protocols an asset; and of community resources and supports in Calgary and Area an asset 
  • Interpersonal communication and an understanding and awareness of cultural issues
  • Good understanding and able to appropriately apply behavior management skills with individuals and in group settings
  • Experience in group facilitation
  • Effective communication skills
  • Strong written skills and working knowledge of related computer programs (Word, Excel, etc)
  • Independent worker and strong team member
  • Agency driver requirements (Class 5 Driver’s License)
  • Current Standard First Aid/Basic Rescuer CPR certificate
  • Able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends in various environments
  • Cleared Criminal Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Welfare Intervention Check
