Job Summary

 

Under the general direction of the Thrive Program Coordinator, the Recreation Therapist provides recreation and leisure programs/activities to individuals with mental illness in community settings.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  1. Provides recreation and leisure programs/activities to individuals with mental illness in community settings by assessing the clients' recreation and leisure needs, developing and coordinating the delivery of appropriate plans, implementing planned interventions, and evaluating outcomes in order to revise and optimize potential.
  2. Consults, and works collaboratively with rehabilitation staff, other health care professionals, and other community  agencies and groups in the resolution of client program issues, client progress, revision of activities/programs, cultural and language barriers, and coordination and integration of activities/programs.
  3. Selects and orients community volunteers who help carry out the recreation and leisure activities, coordinates volunteer activity, and evaluates and recognizes volunteers, as required.  
  4. Organizes and accompanies clients on community recreation and leisure excursions, transporting clients by van, as required.
  5. Performs a variety of administrative/clerical duties including purchasing required supplies for Rehabilitation Services, compiling monthly statements, and attending meetings/committees as required.
  6. Provides an ongoing commitment to client services and continuous improvement to ensure best practice client services and the most effective delivery of service.
  7. Performs other related duties, as required.

 

 

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation or equivalent from an approved college program plus two years recent related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Class 4 B.C. driver's license.
  • Knowledge of community resources, with a commitment to client-centered rehabilitation and a willingness to work with a culturally diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, to problem solve, to work independently with minimal direction, to take initiative, to organize and prioritize work and to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish/maintain satisfactory work relationships with the public and other employees, to deal tactfully and effectively with co-workers, public and staff from other agencies, to maintain confidentiality and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to carry out the physical demands of the job.

 

 

Hours of Work:             Casual vacation coverage, shifts vary Monday – Saturday.
