About CAPLA

In Canada, land asset management professionals working in the energy industry are supported by CAPLA. Based in Calgary, Alberta, CAPLA is one of the largest oil and gas professional associations in the country. CAPLA seeks to support its members and sponsoring companies by building vibrant member engagement, education, and networking programs.

As part of its service to members, CAPLA provides ethics training, education programs, an annual conference, a voluntary certification program, leadership development, mentoring opportunities, a job bank, and an active calendar of networking events.

The Land Discipline

Professionals working in land asset management are essential to the energy sector. Land professionals manage the entire land asset life cycle, from the time a parcel of land is acquired, through the exploration and development stages, and through the final disposition or reclamation phase.

Over the past 20 years, land asset management has evolved. Originally administrative in nature, land asset management has become a complex discipline touching on the law, the regulatory environment, technical developments, and data management. Modern land professionals may specialize as technical experts or team leaders in numerous fields including the acquisition of mineral or surface rights; the drafting, implementation, and administration of mineral and surface agreements; the oversight and management of acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures; data analysis and reporting; and abandonment and reclamation. Many more career development opportunities are continuing to emerge.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED is accountable for management of the operational affairs of CAPLA and providing strong leadership to staff and volunteers who implement the association’s programs and services. In this role, the art of leadership together with skillful management practices combine to ensure strong relationships with board, staff, volunteers, members, and partners in industry and government.

General responsibilities include working closely with the volunteer board to fulfill the organization’s mission; developing resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization; working with the board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach; and ensuring that organizational resources are sufficient and deployed effectively.
