The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN) has been active in Edmonton since 1981 and works with individuals of all ages and families coming to Edmonton from every part of the world. The majority are landed immigrants who have been in Canada five years or less but also included are people who have become citizens, refugee claimants, government sponsored refugees, temporary workers, and visitors. In a year there are people from more than 100 places of origin. Services are available in both official languages and in about 30 other languages.


Job Summary:

Reporting to the Team Lead and Clinical director, the Psychotherapist builds relationships with immigrant and refugee families, youth and children and provides services from a holistic perspective. The Psychotherapist will work closely with team members of the Wellbeing team, which includes several therapists, social workers and settlement workers as well as professional and community partners in the implementation and ongoing evaluation of therapeutic counseling services to adults, children, and youth and families.


Depending on the needs of the program participants, the Psychotherapist will be responsible for providing therapeutic services, holistic assessments as well as supported referrals to appropriate agency services and programming or to external services as needed. The Psychotherapist will provide information and offer appropriate services in a location and time accessible to the client, which might include schools, places in the community, at home or in the office. Appropriate documentation, provision of reports and support of funding reports on a regular basis are required.

  • Work hours will include some evening and weekend work. As services are partially home or school-based, a vehicle and driver’s license are required.



        Masters degree in counseling, clinical psychology, family therapy or clinical social work with experience in     counseling.

  • Experience in working with children, training in play therapy, or other child specific modalities is an assets for this specific position
  • Member of a professional organization (CCPA. CAP. APA or similar)
  • Understands and adheres to professional ethics related to psychological counseling
  • Is knowledgeable and abides by FOIP regulations.
  • Cultural sensitivity and strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with willingness to learn.
  • Experience working with children, youth, adult and family group survivors of torture and trauma, preferably refugee/immigrant survivors of sustained trauma is an asset
  • Strong English communications skills.
  • Experience/facility with MS Office computer applications
  • Proficiency in both official languages is an asset, as is fluency in other languages.
  • Possess a valid class 5 driver's license and own a reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage for work.
  • Must have authorization to work in Canada.
  • Intervention Record Check and Criminal Record Check required.
