We have an opening for a Senior Accountant. This position, working with the Finance Team at the Provincial Office, will take your career and skills to the next level by providing you with senior accounting exposure within the not-for-profit community. This position will perform various accounting functions, including account analyses, reconciliations, and internal/external reporting.  You will also code, enter and process invoices payable for all BC SPCA branches and departments throughout the province, and coordinate cheque runs including printing and distributing cheques on a regular basis. This position also maintains the BC SPCA’s centralized paperless filing system and performs other duties within Finance that may be assigned.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Coding, entry and processing of invoices payable for multi-branch, province-wide organization
  • Maintaining centralized paperless filing system
  • Scheduling and coordinating cheque runs and other duties within Accounts Payable
  • Monthly journal entries, reconciliations and analysis
  • Assisting with preparation of financial statements
  • Performing Gaming account analysis and preparing necessary adjusting entries to correct any variances, and reporting thereon
  • Performing cost, revenue and profitability analysis for ongoing lottery fundraising events
  • Fixed Asset record maintenance and tracking, in conjunction with the Assistant Controller
  • Coordinating the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Assisting with annual budgeting and planning, with guidance from Sr. Management, Branch, Regional and Department Managers, and Board of Directors
  • Processing daily cash-in reports, invoices, journal entries and bank reconciliations for subsidiary(ies), and preparing monthly financial statements for review
  • Other related duties as assigned


Required qualifications & skills:


  • Minimum of three years in an organized accounting environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting, professional accounting designation or MBA is preferred
  • Strong computer skills essential; proficiency with Financial Edge an asset
  • Proficiency with Quickbooks an asset
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Good command of the English language – verbal and written
  • Excellent communication and customer services skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member with minimum supervision
  • Ability to prioritize demands on time
  • Must be flexible to perform a variety of duties
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Experience with not-for-profit accounting an asset
