Directions Youth Services provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with entry points to access the tools, support, and guidance they need to go about making healthy, positive changes in their lives. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Directions Youth Services consists of:

 

Directions Youth Services Centre provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with a range of services to assist them to access housing, and increase health, life-skills and wellbeing. DYSC also encompasses our housing, outreach and transition to adulthood programs.

Directions Youth Detox offers youth a continuum of service, which includes outreach, drop-in and assessment counselling and referrals, in-house detoxification, education and groups.

Directions Youth Safehouse is a first stage emergency shelter to assist youth to return to family/extended family and/or access needed transitional supports to independence.

 

This is a 32 hours per week position within the Youth Detox Program beginning as soon as possible. The hours are Thursday – Sunday 8:30am – 4:30pm West Side. This position reports to the Manager of the Youth Detox Program. This position requires Union Membership.

 

Purpose of the Position:

This entry level Youth Worker position focuses on the role of creating and maintaining a safe, supportive and therapeutic living environment for detoxing youth in a team environment. Youth workers aid and manage the daily needs of the residents, the position will consist of working with a variety of youth residents struggling with addiction including those with intellectual, emotional/social challenges, dual diagnosis and sexual abuse victims.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and screening of referrals, non-standard hours admissions, including suicide risk assessment/safety plans and discharge of clients; completes all relevant documentation following standard procedure.
  • Performs searches of client belongings during admission, orients and assists residents settle in to program, safely dispose of contraband, sharps, and weapons following standard procedure.
  • Provides support, encouragement and education to clients in matters related to crisis intervention, harm reduction, conflict resolution, community resources, alcohol and drug information, and advocacy to clients and referral calls.
  • Monitors youth in detox 24 hours per day, ensuring the safety and comfort of clients, by observing and documenting client behaviour, withdrawal symptoms/stressors/physical and emotional needs and informing counselling staff/supervisor as required.
  • Monitors the overall safety of the resource through enforcing program guidelines and observation to detect severe withdrawal, drug use, and contraband.
  • Participates in the management of emergency situations by initiating first aid, calling emergency medical services, and defusing situations.
  • Responsive to counselling team, other service agencies and health care professionals in the development, implementation and revision of client service plans.
  • Attend medical assessments, advocating for client and communicating non-medical program model to physicians for clients requiring medical clearance or withdrawal management medication treatments, or medication approval. Follow standard procedures in ordering receiving and disposing of all medication, administrating all approved medication following established policy.
  • Ensures maintenance of the facility and care of clients by performing household cleaning, yard work, and minor repairs. Preparation of meals, maintaining supply inventories, assisting with orders and shopping.
  • Performs clerical duties as required such as answering phones, filing, sorting, and indexing Maintaining daily client logs, notes, documents, forms, reports, youth review and statistical information.
  • Participates in training practicum students and trainees in a job shadow model.
  • Assist youth in accessing community support by supervising, escorting, and transporting clients to all outside appointments.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, supervision, and continuing education and/or agency initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to all program and agency policies and procedures, accreditation and community licensing standards.
  • Perform all other duties as required.

Job Specifications:

Education and training:

  • Two years post-secondary course/diploma/certificate in related field
  • Valid BC Drivers License - requires submission of abstract.
  • Current First Aid Certificate and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset

 

Experience:

  • Minimum one year experience working with youth, preferably in support of youth who have alcohol /drug misuse issues.
  • Applicants with personal experience with addiction require a minimum two years clean/sober
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered

 

Abilities:

  • Knowledge of community, social and health resources
  • Knowledge of substance misuse, adolescent development and the problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals; basic understanding of behavioural management
  • Basic knowledge of mental health issues and treatment
  • Ability to observe and recognize change in clients
  • Ability to demonstrate and assist clients with the daily activities of living
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behaviour, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to establish/maintain satisfactory work relationships with the public and other employees to deal tactfully and effectively with co-workers, public and other agencies and to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and a part of a team
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse population
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position

 

Working conditions: 24 hour residential program

  • Ability to work shift work, awake overnights, days, evenings
