FINANCE DIRECTOR

FULL-TIME, PERMANENT

Phoenix is seeking an experienced financial manager to join our dynamic team. Phoenix’s Finance Director is responsible for a full cycle of accounting tasks and ensures that financial activities support the success of our programs. The successful candidate will ensure that the organization is well managed financially and that strong financial practices and processes adhered to. They will offer financial support and leadership to the management teams and staff overall. Reporting to the Executive Director the Finance Director is a member of the Executive Management Team.

Hours of Work:  Flexible hours based on a 40 hour week

 

Location: 6035 Coburg Rd., Halifax, NS

 

Screening Requirements: This position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search, a child abuse register check and proof of education.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the implementation and monitoring of the organization’s budget, including:
    • Coordinating the preparation of accurate, timely and relevant financial statements and reports.
    • Helping to ensure that the organization is deficit-free and program staff are supported in meeting their goals.
    • Ensuring compliance with tax and other regulatory requirements including the completion of charitable tax returns and HST returns.
    • Completing all month-end activities including managing accounts payable and receivable and issuing invoices.
    • Managing cash flow and disbursements of grants.
  • Assist with organizational budget preparation;
  • Conduct annual audit processes, acting as the primary liaison to external auditors;
  • Support program staff in creating and managing budgets for existing and new programs;
  • Oversee all payroll functions including issuing T4s and ROEs;
  • Manage employee health and benefits program;
  • Ensure proper accounting practices and controls are in place and adhered to;
  • Oversee implementation and monitoring of accounting and finance policies;
  • Lead or participate in process improvement projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree in Business Administration or Commerce with a major in Accounting. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA).
  • Five (5) or more years’ experience in a finance role.
  • Proficient with technology including strong familiarity with Quickbooks and Microsoft Office products.
  • Leadership, organizational, and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail with an ability to be flexible and adaptable when required.
  • Comfortable working independently.
  • Solution-oriented and with a desire for continuous learning.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization is an asset.
