The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a Communications Officer for the BC Wildfires Recovery Program.  The Communications Officer reports to the Communications Lead for the Recovery Program, and will be a contributing member of the Communications and Partnerships Department. The Communications Officer maximizes opportunities to demonstrate accountability of finances and effective programs to beneficiaries, donors, media, and other partners and stakeholders.  The Communications Officer will participate in the response to the demands of the media on the day-to-day operations, provide technical support on communication issues to staff, and produced tools to communicate effectively with beneficiaries.
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with local media;
  • Provide written and visual documentation of CRC’s work, such as stories, web articles, blogs, photos, and video;
  • Synthesize information/data from the field and program staff, prepare progress reports for internal and external audiences, including monthly operational reports and weekly updates;
  • Participate in response to the demands of the media on the day-to-day operations;
  • Work with Communications and Stakeholder Relations to support external reporting to CRC stakeholders as required;
  • Manage local media requests, in collaboration with provincial and national media relations. At times, the communications officer may act as spokesperson or designate another spokesperson or information source;
  • Provide technical assistance on the development of communications tools for program staff, as required;
  • Strengthen capacity of program staff in public relations issues, including effective communication with stakeholders;
  • Help to identify any potential reputational risks and confidentially raise the issues to the communications director overseeing the response;
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for this job are completion of post-secondary education in communication, journalism, public relations or a related field and at least three (3) years of job related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
  • Must have excellent communications skills in English, a working knowledge of French is preferred; and fluency in another language is an asset
  • Demonstrated abilities as a spokesperson and proven writing skills in a variety of different formats (web, reports, and news releases) are essential
  • Skills and knowledge in developing high quality communications tools for public relations materials, such as video and photos is required
  • Experience working in response to issues related to crisis and disasters is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work in high stress environments with minimal supervision is needed
  • Strong initiative, diplomacy, flexibility, and sound decision making skills are required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence Basic First Aid certification, or be willing to acquire certification
  • Experience working with volunteers and in a cultural diverse environment is a definite asset
  • Customer service skills

WORKING CONDITIONS 
 
35-hour work week, Monday to Friday however some non-traditional hours of work may be required. The incumbent will also be required to be on call.  Travel between Kamloops/Williams Lake and surrounding communities  will be required.  Other travel may also be required, on occasion.
