Position Title: Peer Leader – 3 positions                  Start Date: September 2017 – March 31, 2018

Rate of Pay: $15.00/hour                                           Reports To: Filipino/Assyrian Youth and Parent Support Workers

Hours: Part-time (up to 5 hours/week)                       Location: Various NYCH Sites

 


North York Community House is committed to working with individuals, groups and neighbourhoods to address the issues that are of concern to them. From reducing isolation for newcomers and providing support to new parents, to bringing together residents to strengthen their communities, our goal is to provide the support people need today, in order for them to succeed tomorrow.


Peer Leaders will be responsible for supporting NYCH’s NSP-Youth Program for Filipino and Assyrian newcomer youth groups by outreaching to other youth and parents, completing registration forms and conducting intake, making referrals and providing information on community resources/services, planning culturally and age-appropriate programs, facilitating activity-based sessions, and supporting the collection of evaluation and reporting statistics.

 

Main tasks & responsibilities:

Activity Development and Implementation

  • Conducts outreach with youth and parents from Filipino & Assyrian communities
  • Participates in Peer Leader training and orientation sessions
  • Facilitates activity-based workshops with participants (including all planning and preparation)
  • Connects program participants to other local services, as appropriate
  • Supports staff and other peer leaders in preparing for and delivering workshops, presentations, and trainings
  • Supports youth with various collective action projects (including all planning and follow-up)
  • Contributes to the development of program reports
  • Purchases snacks and supplies for workshops as required
  • Provides insight about transformations within the communities
  • Additional supports and duties as required

 

Administrative Duties

  • Submits receipts and program expenses in a timely and accurate way
  • Submit time sheets by regular deadline
  • Inputs data into appropriate forms and reports, as needed
  • Maintains and completes required program registrations, evaluations, records and reports
  • Attends NYCH and team meetings, trainings and events
  • Represents NYCH at community events, committee meetings, etc.

Required Qualifications:

Education

  • Some high school or equivalent work experience

 

Experience and Skills

  • Experience with a NYCH youth program
  • Strong understanding of expected responsibilities, and ability to demonstrate initiative in preparation/set up/clean-up for activities
  • Demonstrated punctuality and attendance, and timely communication with staff/supervisor around any absences
  • Ability to effectively outreach to and engage participants
  • Demonstrated positive, enthusiastic attitude and strong ability to work well in a group
  • Desire to support and enforce an anti-oppressive environment
  • Comfortable working with a variety of multimedia technology
  • Working knowledge of a range of research methods
  • Demonstrated group facilitation skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Displays exemplary role model behavior for diversity
  • Lived experience of marginalized/racialized communities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English
  • Oral and written communication skills in other languages (Tagalog and/or Assyrian, Arabic) an asset
  • Strong understanding and connections to Filipino and/or Assyrian communities, a must

Other Requirements:

Filipino/Assyrian participants of NYCH youth programs will be given priority.

Typically works part-time hours as determined by program needs, with occasional evening/weekend work.
