About the Landing

The Landing: Society for Gender and Sexual Diversity is a non-profit service at the University of Alberta that offers support for gender and sexual diversity. We strive to promote gender equity on a broad scale, and advocate for the safety and acceptance of individuals of all genders and sexualities in campus life. As part of this mandate, we support LGBTTQQPIANU+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, Queer, Questioning, Pansexual, Intersex, Asexual, Non-Binary, Unlabelled, and more) communities and individuals, as well as their supporters, friends, family and loved ones.

Our mandate is:

  1. To offer support for gender and sexual diversity at the University of Alberta and related communities,
  2. To support LGBTTQQPIANU+ communities and individuals, as well as their supporters, friends, families, and loved ones,
  3. To promote gender equity on a broad scale, and advocate for the safety and acceptance of individuals of all genders and sexualities in campus life, and
  4. To offer a safe space to LGBTTQQPIANU+ individuals, as well as workshops, educational sessions, and outreach activities for all persons.

Overview

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the Landing. It provides strategic leadership, establishes policy, and oversees the operations and financial performance of the Society. In addition to regular business, in the coming year our board will help tackle exciting initiatives such as:

  • Developing and implementing the organization’s strategic plan
  • Creating and supporting programming alongside Landing staff
  • Developing compelling grant proposals to secure additional funding
  • Leading new fundraising campaigns and events

Role Description & Commitment

The required commitment for the Director positions are as follows:

  • The ability to serve a term of two (2) years, starting October 2017
  • Attending monthly board meetings in person
  • Serve on the Board and one or more of its sub-committees (personnel, policy & procedures, finance & administration)
  • Represent and advocate for The Landing on the University of Alberta campus and across Edmonton

The Nomination Committee is particularly interested in candidates with experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Anti-oppression and intersectionality
  • Consensus-based decision making
  • Justice and social issues impacting LGBTTQQPIANU+ people and the QTBIPOC community in particular
  • Previous experience on a not-for-profit or charity board of directors
  • Not-for-profit law
  • Financial management and accounting
  • Fundraising development
  • Human resources
  • Strategic policy and planning
  • Ability and willingness to serve as Treasurer

The expected time commitment for this role is 5 to 15 hours per month. This is an unpaid volunteer position.

Qualifications

  • A strong commitment to the Landing’s Mandate, Mission and Values and a demonstrated interest in gender and sexual diversity and equity
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills
  • Interest or experience in modelling anti-oppressive behaviour
  • Eligibility for one of the following vacancies: member of an organization serving the LGBTQ+ community; University of Alberta staff; member of the wider Edmonton community; Student-at-Large (see this [link] for more information about Student-at-Large positions).
