The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Community Programs Manager, the Community Food Program Coordinator is responsible for developing and running community food programs that address food insecurity and actively involve community participants at the Mustard Seed Church. This position will provide mentorship, leadership and assist in creating an environment that is committed to addressing food insecurity by involving community participants as active participants in food preparation through community kitchens and other food security initiatives.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Guide, facilitate, and assist in the development of the Community Food program according to the policies and procedures of the organization
  • Operate the Community Food Program in a fiscally responsible manner through budget management
  • Give leadership to the participants and volunteers involved in the programs
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate programs around food including Heat & Eat, Dinner Club, and initiate expansion of community food programs at all TMS locations.
  • Ensure food programs are a safe, respectful environment for all community members, staff, volunteers and visitors
  • Build and nurture relationships with external partners and stakeholders
  • Ensure all equipment needed for the program is good working order
  • Acquire food for program use
  • Maintain specific records, stats and incident reports on log books and computer files
  • Other duties and site related duties may be assigned when required

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Diploma in the human services or food services field.
  • Minimum of one year related experience working with individuals facing mental health, addictions, chronic illness, homelessness, poverty and related challenges.
  • A demonstrated understanding of the issues contributing to poverty
  • Passion for food – eating, cooking, growing, and food security
  • Proven experience facilitating workshops and programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, applied time management, strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent de-escalation and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience working in a volunteer - based organization is considered an asset
  • Highly motivated, compassionate, creative and responsible person

 

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Availability to work during the week and occasional weekends, including afternoon and evening shifts
  • Considerable periods of standing and working in a fast paced environment
  • Moderate physical and mental effort; Must be able to lift up to 20lbs and have good mobility to move food, this position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solving
  • Must have a reliable vehicle
  • Driver’s Abstract, Vulnerable Sector Check and Employment Security Check is required
  • Employment Security Check and Vulnerable Sector Check is required
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
