Part Time – Permanent  (21 hours a week)


The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is dedicated to helping anyone concerned with or facing dementia have the confidence and skills to maintain quality of life, to ensuring that public policy and perceptions reflect the issues and reality, and to securing funding for research.


Working independently and as part of a provincial team, the Support & Education Coordinator/First Link works with First Link referral systems to provide outreach to clients, deliver support and education programs within an assigned region, and build strong community and health care professional relationships.


This permanent position is based in the Castlegar Alzheimer Resource Centre; travel throughout the West Kootenay region will be required.


Key Responsibilities


  • Ensure the Society’s core programs and services (information, support services and education) are consistently delivered at the community level, utilizing various delivery methods and responding to the needs of the primary target groups
  • Deliver standardized workshops for caregivers, people with early symptoms of dementia , and the public
  • Develop and oversee support groups for family/friend caregivers and people with early symptoms of dementia, recruiting and supporting volunteer facilitators
  • Develop and maintain relationships with health care professionals through presentations, informal and formal contacts and information exchanges to build referral network
  • Manage the referral process to facilitate early intervention
  • Maintain proactive outreach and ongoing follow up with people with dementia and their families, and connections to services and supports
  • Work with the team to develop and implement a plan to build and maintain an effective volunteer base to help deliver programs and services, utilizing Society accepted policies and practices
  • Maintain a client & referral sources database, ensuring recordkeeping is objective and current
  • Collect intake forms and statistics, prepare reports and participate in the evaluation process


Qualifications and Skills


  • Post-secondary degree and 3 to 5 years of experience in a health or social agency related function OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with Alzheimer’s disease/dementia and caregiving issues
  • Experienced in providing support and education in a human services environment, public speaking and presenting structured education programs, group facilitation, peer support interventions, volunteer management, and developing and building community connections.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, strong organizational and time management skills, able to work independently, strong attention to detail.


NOTE:   Some evening and weekend work is required. Flexibility with regards to scheduling is expected.  Must be able to drive and have reliable transportation.
