Youth Housing Programs offer safe, supportive transitional housing for youth experiencing complex barriers such as addictions, legal, history of abuse, mental health, poverty and homelessness, and PSECA concerns. As the Lead Transitional Support Worker (Lead TSW), your primary responsibilities are to provide leadership during the evening hours and to supervise the house Transitional Support Work Team.

 

The Lead TSW will ensure that all house related tasks (maintenance, cleaning, upkeep) are completed by the team to ensure a safe, clean and supportive home environment for the youth. In addition, the Lead TSW will support the TSW team to teach youth valuable life skills which support their transition to adulthood.

 

Hours: Temporary Full-time (1 year contract): Monday to Thursday: 2:30pm to 11:30pm; additional 4 hours    per week in supervision time.

In Your Role You Will

  • Build rapport with the youth, be an active and supportive listener.
  • Encourage youth to participate in life skills development (household shopping, meal planning/ preparation, maintenance of household/landscape, money management etc.).
  • Help create a safe and supportive home environment for youth, including maintaining a clean living environment.
  • Assist youth to actively participate in their transition plan.
  • Support youth in establishing and maintaining healthy sleep routines and habits.
  • Supervise, train and coordinate the Transitional Support Workers team.Ensure that the Transitional Support Workers team has completed household tasks and that house cleanliness and organization is consistent and complete.
  • Conduct and complete supervisions, evaluations, and goal development for the Transitional Support Workers team.
  • Ensure conformance with all legislation, bylaws and standards (health, fire, licensing, safety, city, and accreditation). 

Education and Certifications

  • Degree/diploma in the Child and Youth Care (CYC), Social Work, Human Services, or related field.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR, Aboriginal Awareness, Medication Administration, De-escalation, Protection of Sexually Exploited Children’s Act, Suicide Intervention, Harm Reduction, Food Safety and WHMIS
  • Must provide Police Information Check (including vulnerable sector) and Child Intervention Check.
  • Reliable, registered vehicle, driver’s license, a recent driver’s abstract and valid insurance including two million dollar liability coverage.

 Experience

  • 3+ years’ experience working with marginalized populations, high risk and vulnerable youth struggling with addictions, poverty, mental health, and traumatic histories.
  • 1+ year experience working in a supervisory capacity (experience with staff supervision in the human services sector an asset).
  • Working knowledge and experience with harm reduction, resiliency, trauma-informed and solution focused practice.
  • Demonstrated experience de-escalating crisis and potentially violent situations with individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol, under extreme stress &/or struggling with acute/chronic mental health crises.
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, database applications and computer operation.
