An exciting opportunity exists for a Child & Youth Activity Worker at Durrant Transition House, a program of Atira Women's Resource Society. Durrant offers residential support to women (and their children) who are seeking a safe haven from violence/abuse and struggles with substance use but who are not yet ready for an intense residential treatment program. Atira offers a challenging and rewarding work environment. Understanding the dynamics of violence against women and children and the intersectionality of oppressions within a feminist framework and being able to apply this understanding in your day-to-day practice is mandatory.

Qualifications:

Experience working with children and youth who have/are experiencing and or have witnessed violence and abuse.  Demonstrated working knowledge of group facilitation and one-to-one support work.  Knowledge of the impact trauma has on children and parenting and a demonstrated working knowledge of related community and provincial programs and supports is an asset.  Must be comfortable working with mothers who are struggling with substance use and/or mental & spiritual wellness and understand at be at ease working in a harm reduction framework. Must have a well-developed analysis of the ongoing impact of colonization and the resulting impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuit women.

Because of the demographics of Surrey, preference will be given to women who meet the qualifications and who are First Nations, Metis or Inuit or who speak Punjabi or one of the languages of the five largest refugee populations; from Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan or Bhutan.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan, facilitate and assess developmentally appropriate activities and experiences that promote the well-being of children/youth and that reflects the diverse needs of children/youth
  • Provides one-to-one and group support to children/youth
  • Organizes and facilitates recreational activities such as communal meals, cultural celebrations, movie nights etc. for children/youth and their moms’
  • Providing group and individual childcare as required to mothers who may have court appearances, appointments with lawyers, counselors or doctors etc.
  • Keeps accurate records, files, log notes & statistical information as per Atira’s practice/policy;
  • Assists families moving in and moving out
  • Performs light housekeeping duties
  • Responds to emergency situations

Education:

A degree, diploma or certificate in child & youth work and a minimum of one year experience working in a similar setting and or some form of skill-based training acquired through community programs like those offered at the Justice Institute or the Native Education College and/or through relevant volunteer training in combination with a minimum of three years’ experience in a relevant workplace setting. Formal education/credentials will count only as much as work experience.

Additional Requisites:

  • A valid First Aid certificate is required
  • Early Childhood Educator License is an asset
  • A current Non Violent Crisis Intervention certificate, or equivalent, is required (achieved or upgraded within past 12 months)
  • A valid Food Safe certificate is required
  • All positions are subject to a criminal records review

Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle while on shift.
