Auxiliary/On Call Casual

 

Pacific Community Resources Society provides a range of services from Vancouver to Chilliwack, with approximately 40 programs and 250 staff members.  Our programs include; housing services, youth centers, employment training and skill building, education, drug and alcohol addictions counselling and prevention programs. The Broadway Youth Resource Centre (BYRC), located in Vancouver, BC is currently looking for Auxiliary Cooks to support the Kitchen Program.  

 

PRIMARY DUTIES:

                  1) To provide a healthy, nutritious meal for youth:

  • Purchase food inventory and manage portions to serve a hot meal for between 30-70 youth, 5 days /week
  • Maintain a strong emphasis on including nutritious, whole foods to meals

 

2) To provide culinary skills training and supervision to youth working in the kitchen:

  • Support the training of youth in basic kitchen health and safety skills, including knife safety, kitchen communication, cleaning procedures, equipment safety, professionalism, food safety, and basic cooking methods
  • Provide life skills workshops in partnership with internal partners/programs when time permits
  • Incorporates diverse cultural foods into menu and skills training program

 

3) To maintain health and safety of the kitchen:

  • Maintains security of kitchen by performing duties such as ensuring all knives are kept

under lock and key except those in current use

  • Maintain high standard of record keeping including sanitation, temperatures, FIFO and health and safety procedure
  • Participates as team member with other staff to ensure a safe and caring environment, to ensure safety of clients and premises
  • Performs a variety of cleaning duties throughout shift such as cleaning food prep

     equipment, sweeping and mopping floors and deep cleaning kitchen as required

4) Administration:

  • Complete petty cash reconciliation for food purchases
  • Maintain kitchen documentation and records for reporting
  • Understand and work within the financial budgets of the program

     

Academic and Job Experience Required:

  • Professional Cook Level One or minimum two years as a kitchen lead.
  • Combined 1 year experience working with youth.

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Records Check including the vulnerable sector
  • Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Current Food Safe Level 1
  • Must be willing to have or submit proof of receiving the annual flu vaccine
  • High level of communication skills both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment
  • Demonstrated physical/mental ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Suitable to work with vulnerable youth and young adults

                    

Desired Requirements:

  • Second language in Cantonese/Mandarin, Vietnamese, Spanish, or other relevant languages in the East Vancouver/Midtown community, is an asset.
  • Experience with incorporating diverse cultural foods into menus
  • Knowledge of local cultural foods from Coast Salish territories
