Job Description



The primary accountability for Family Services Worker is to assist in the facilitation and delivery of all Community and Family Services Programs including; basic needs programs and support to families and individuals.


Service Responsibilities:


·         To complete all duties in accordance with the Standards and Policies & Procedures of The Salvation Army London Centre of Hope

·         Participate in regular staff meetings to review operational effectiveness, changes in policies and procedures, and in-service training

·         As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the Community Services Manager

·         Assist in developing and administering evaluation processes

·         Assist in development and presentation of promotional and informational materials

·         Assist in the orientation and training of students and volunteers

·         Responsible to provide assistance to client’s in the various programs:

o    Food Bank

o    Vouchers to use at partnering agencies

o    Christmas Hamper Program

o    other programs and services as assigned by manager

·         Answer and screen telephone calls, providing referrals to other resources available at the Centre of Hope, or scheduling appointments as required (this includes both Community and Family Services and Housing Support Services Programs).

·         Verify and document information as required for registration in Community and Family Services Programs, in order to assess eligibility requirements.

·         Provide referrals to other social service resources available in the community to meet their emotional, spiritual and physical needs.

·         Ongoing contact and support of clients as required according to program mandate.

·         Maintain client files/ data base/excel spreadsheets.

·         Assist manager in the collection and compilation of data and statistics.

·         Assist manager in the preparation and distribution of statistical and operational reports as required.

·         Build and maintain positive partnerships with community agencies and other stakeholders.

·         Participate in community projects, events, co-coordinating organizations and meetings.

·         Assist in developing and administering evaluation processes.

·         Assist in development and presentation of promotional and informational materials.

·         Assist in the recruitment, orientation, training, supervision and evaluation of students and volunteers.

·         Adhere to fire and health and safety standards pertaining to Community Services and other areas of the centre

·         Responsible to work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Acts and Regulations

·         Responsible to use personal protective equipment and clothing as directed by the employer

·         Responsible to report workplace hazards and dangers

·         Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment

·         Responsible to report workplace injuries or illness

·         To promote the mission, policies and objectives of The Salvation Army

·         To maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and coworkers of The Salvation Army Centre of Hope

·         To network with other Salvation Army programs and other community agencies

·         To treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution

·          To act in the best interest of the employer at all times


Perform other position related duties as required.



·         Secondary School completion or equivalent, a degree or diploma in the field of human or social services is preferred

·         Experience in the field of social services is required

·         Knowledge of issues relevant to homelessness and poverty and sensitivity to the barriers facing high-risk populations

·         Knowledge of other community resources (i.e., Ontario Works, ODSP and the Residential Tenancies Act) is required

·         Excellent communication skills (both verbal and in writing)

·         Proficient in Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint and Access)

·         Strong organizational skills with the ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervision

·         Ability to lift up to 20 lbs

·         Self-motivated and disciplined

·         First Aid/ CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification or willingness to obtain certifications


Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screeninG that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the National Canadian Policy Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
